First of all -----yes i am new here(aplaud Now)
I feel intimitated because every body has old tractors. Mine is only a 1977---itsa newbie too!
Now---The governor is bad and i took it off. The throttle lever is locked up. There does'nt seem to be any slack any where. I have a manual but it does not go into disasembly instructions. (beat it with a large hammer?).
Can someone kinda point me in the right direction. Be gentle I'm a old man!

Follow this link to the manual to reassemble.
http://www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/index.html
You can search and find the manual there. In the meanwhile plenty of penetratin oil .
I take it you mean the casting that pivots on a pin on the gov cover.
Rudi will be along shortly and in the welcome wagon will lead you

First, to the greatest forum on the internet, and to the Cub Family. You will find that all the folks on this forum are kind, helpful and just full of Cub info and knowledge. They also happen to be the finest folks I have ever met
The Operator's Manual is very useful, but you really need to get the Blue Ribbon Service Manual -- the GSS-1411 listed below. It is also on the Cub Manual Server.. and you can download it to your computer... it will take some time however.. print off the pages that you need and take em with you to the shop to fix yer Cub...
As for having a newbie Cub... well, just remember.. a Cub is a Cub they are all equal.. even if the newer ones got a flattened nose... must have been in a push'n'shove competition with a Deere.. at least we know the Cub won
Ok, so here is the spiel :
I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub.
Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I am always looking for YOUR favourite dealers for New and Used Parts to include here. These pages are intended to complement our Official FarmallCub.com Website Sponsors:
I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better is you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.
IF you really want to get the skinny on all things Cub, might I suggest you get a copy of Ken Updike's Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet's . While you are at it Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet is Ken's latest addition to the series. Along with Guy Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide, these are three must have's in anyone's collection.
In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.
I truly hope that you enjoy your Cub and that you will be a frequent contributor to the forum. Again, to the Cub Family

Morgan, welcome to the forum. As Bill pointed out, some penetrating oil probably will solve the problem. The throttle rod goes to an arm that is mounted on a pivot and moves a spring to adjust engine speed. it is not unusual if one has been setting for a while for the arm to be bound to the shaft rather than moving freely on it. use some penetrating oil, and keep trying to move it. Don't use force, it is easy to break.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
you are part of the problem!!!

Morgan sorry I hit and ran before but I was doing a last check befor heading to the DR.
I hope you did not take the governor cover off. It isn't a big deal if you did but it is a pain in the but to get it back on correctly because it also connects to the Distributor. Mine broke a few years back trying to free it. I got impatient. If you did take it off. Print out the manual from Rudy's site. Read it carefully a few times.
You have to take the gas tank, hood off. I had to remove the generator and fan. don't try turn the nut on the shaft for the fan. Turn the shaft. A wrench will fit on the shaft. It is hexagonal. Next bring #1 cylinder to TDC firing stroke. Now remove the dist. Be careful not to let the drive fall out the back of the dist or you have some extra fooling around to do to time it right. There are marks on gear teeth you can see with a mirror or the dist seal out. I used a mirror my dealer was out of seals and the grass was high.Next install the Gov and then the dist. The rotor should face 1:30 2:00 Oclock. Do a cold time with the dist screw loose turn conter clock wise then bring clockwise till the points juse break. Tighten and put every thing else back and you should start ok.
Easier to free it in place.

Almost messed up
well I did soak it in penetrating oil and loosened it somewhat. I was able to turn it with a pair of channel locks but it would'nt slide off. I have a small ball peen hammer and i tapped it with it and it came off without mishap. After i got it cleaned up, I looked at it closely and saw that a previous owner had broke the ear off and braized it back lucky me huh! I could have broken it again. Anywho i saw nothing that looked bad, no wear, really not even dirty. The bearings were clean oil with no feeling of grit or wear. So i washed it up and put it back together. Now, comes the fun
were you referring to a mirror to see the dot on the main gear because of the seal blocking the veiw? Also what was meant by the drive falling off the dist?
I can't believe all the response to my post. A real bunch of good cub guys

Hi Morgan- Sounds like you're on your way to success already, but I wanted to let you know that 1) I also have a practically "new" '76 Cub, and 2) that it took me about two weeks to get that same little pivot freed up enough to be able to change the speed of my Cub with nearly daily soaking in WD-40. Driving it home was a slow ride! Thankfully, now that I keep it indoors, I have not had the problem recur. In fact, it moves so free now, I had to get a new throttle lever quadrant with bigger teeth to hold things in place!
