What Color & Kind of Paint to use on Rear Rims?????
I know I've read this somewhere before, but heck if I can find it. I would like to know what you have used on rear rims. Brand of paint that worked good and what color code if you have it? Also, how long did you let it cure before mounting the tires?
I got a quart of Sherwin Williams paint today and it just does not look right. It looked silver in the book, but I sprayed part of the rims and they kinda turned out almost white, and definitely not silver.
I thought I saw somwhere that people were using a Cadillac silver, but I cannot find that string either.
Anyway, any advice would be appreciated. I've got the rims all ready to paint, and no paint. Kinda like the cart before the horse. I know, I should have just sent them for powder coating, but I'm already sand blasted and primed so I might as well finish.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill,
If you have an IH dealer within reach, Try their Silver (Argent in French).
The rims Gary has painted for me have been some unknown (to me) automotive color, but all I've painted myself have been with IH Silver #B17563. Even the rims that were just painted by my sandblaster this week from the dregs from a gallon look good to me. I think you'll like the color too. That's what they made the color for!

Awesome Cub Don!
Bill I used liquid Rustoleum 'Aluminum'. The guy that sandblasted both sets said to use a brush on primer (better coverage) so I used that for both pairs (and the back end of Rufus too) and the Aluminum for both sets of rims. Pretty strange paint, very thin with what may be ground aluminum or something in it. But it does look good when you are done.
Of course I am still not happy about the whole thing cause it took him 2 months to sandblast em and it was cheaper to get them done completely out at Videodoc's neighbor! Not to mention the 3 nights of painting them. But hey, they are done now.

Don and Larry,
Beautiful Cubs. How do you feel the durability is of the rustoleum? I was not too happy Ace paint that I had used on the 22 Mower, and I was told it was basically the same as Rustoleum. The stuff seemed very soft and did not seem to ever dry to a hard finish. On the other hand, I have used the CNH 935 white on my grader blade, which dried like cement and seems extremely durable.
Those are the only two things I've painted recently, so that is why I'm asking the questions. Also, I can run up the street to Home Depot and pick up a quart of Rustoleum at lunch, but the nearest Case IH dealer is 45-minutes away, so I'm trying to plan my day out and do what makes the most sense.
Thanks for all your help,
Bill

Bill,
I'm pleased with the durability of the Rustoleum, so far. It's about two years old at this point. Then again, I haven't removed the tires and put them back on since the rims were done, either. So, I don't know how they would fare in that respect. The more I think about it, I'm pretty sure the actual color was "Aluminum", like Larry's, as opposed to "Silver". The paint was brushed on, by the way. It has a semi-gloss finish, not shiny.

I want to see them rims on your Cub..... gee.. I wonder what it would cost me to have all of my rims galvanized... sure would help them last longer...
How un-correct is that huh But sure looks nice...

Rudi,
Actually, you would be perfectly correct galvanizing them. I actually thought about that, but figured it would be a-lot harder to get done than just painting. My rims were galvanized, see here:

I used Silver Frost Metallic from Dupont's Nason Ful-thane line. It's a single stage urethane automotive paint. It's the same paint that I used on the rest of the tractor, so I found a silver/metallic that I thought looked about right and used it. Very pleased. I recently had a flat and had to change out a tube (old patch had let go). The paint held up well with no problems. A pint should be plenty (about $30 bucks). Of course, it's automotive, so it needs a reducer and hardner too.

Yup, I would be correct on the REAR rims.. I have 4 sets or is it 5 now... so I will be getting a bulk price on em I think, and it is pretty much the plan. But what I liked was the look of the fronts with the Red centre and the silver rims...
The only thing is, once they are galvanized the fronts, might not be paintable.......... I forgot that....

Well, I decided to go with the Rustoleum. I just could not reason driving 45 miles each way in my Dodge 2500 getting 15mpg, just to pick up a quart of overpriced CaseIH paint. The rustoleum was only $8.00 for the quart, which cost less than it would for me to pay for gas each way to go to the CaseIH dealer. That quart should give me about 4 coats of paint plus leftover for touchup after mounting the tires.
I'll be painting tonight, so hopefully I'll have some good pictures by Monday.
Thanks to everyone for your help.

Good luck, Bill. I think you'll be happy. If not, you can se
Thanks for the vote of confidence Don
I have been getting a-lot of that lately. The guy that just bought the 154 from me last week was really pushing me to sell the 77 Cub too.
Then, to beat it all, my dad picked up a new Simplicity Legacy, 27hp compact tractor, and I was using it a couple of weeks ago. WOW, what an amazing tractor. Everything new, shiny, smoothe, foot controlled hydrostatic drive, beautiful cut, tilt steering, high back bucket seat.... I did start thinking about selling the Cub and a couple of others to pick up a Legacy for myself, but I finally came back to reality
