Plastic Mulch with Cub

Postby Dave (69 lo-boy) » Fri Jun 30, 2006 12:03 pm

Has anyone here made or seen a device to put down plastic mulch with a Cub?
A neighbor brought his tractor (an old Massey) over this spring and put down about 400 feet of black plastic mulch for me in about 20 minutes.
It was two discs turning a furrow for the plastic edge to go in, followed by two tires to push down and hold the edge, then two discs to throw dirt over the edge to hold it down, it was a home made device.
I wanna make one, if anyone has any good pictures or plans it would help, if not I will work on my own this fall and post drawing and pictures.
Dave

Our local produce farmer uses a device like that, I've never really seen it up close- but this might give me a reason too   He is also a IH collector with many 140's but the next time I see him out I'll try and stop to take some pictures I'm sure his is not homemade, but I could be wrong :)

These are commercially available for fruit growers. My in-laws used to have one for the 3-pt. they used for strawberries and tomatoes. They also used to have one in-line with a transplanter, but it was a little unwieldy. A perfect job for a Cub! Maybe you could even belly mount the disks!

I think you could easily do it with a rear tool bar and a couple of disk hillers.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Thanks, Big Dog. I was just thinking that something like that would work
from what Dave described.

The Farm I work for has one of these, it looks like it would be pretty simple to make, besides the roller, but that can't be too hard either, I agree with BD, a set of hillers would work great, and a set of discs inverted on a front tool bar :?:

don't forget to take pics if you make one :!:

good luck

Johnny

Here is a rough drawing of what I have in mind, the details will depend on the parts I am able to scavenge
I think wheelbarrow tires would be good since they are rounded and won't tear like a flat bottomed tire.
Everything will need to be adjustable width to fine tune operation.
Any suggestions?
Does anyone know where I can get a fast hitch tongue?

Dave:

Very interesting concept.... I am going to keep watching this thread...

I think for the fast hitch tongue -- spike -- TSC keeps getting mentioned as a source. I imagine Ken at C&G, TM Tractor Parts, JP Tractor Salvage or Ralph's Cubs should be able to supply you with one..

Also, I really envy you guys who can use CAD software... I am still of the old school... never did learn vectored graphics... and now I think I am scared of it.. maybe I should see if there is a nite course or something available...

Also Leinbach's and Agri-fab? in North Carolina. Leinbach's has two lengths of F/H points. The short one should work for you. Not on their web site but you can call and ask. I bought a long one several years ago, it was $22.00. http://www.leinbachs.com/leinbachline/bedder.html
They also sell a rear mount F/H blade.
