BD:

Is this a strictly mower deck issue, or could it be fuel, governor related? Lacking power, sort of conjures up governor problems.. along with maybe a carb clean or possibly a re-build :?:

Rudi - he stated that it seems to have adequate power for pushing snow so I would check out the mower deck first if it were me.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

BigDog is correct. before I reset my deck it would struggle in thick grass and either I backed up and went at it in a lower gear or raised the deck it would almost bogg completely to a stop. I raised the rear 1 1/2 inches on a 3 blade 60" deck it mows great now and I can cut anything shorter that 12" in 2nd gear aslong as there is gas in the tank. I asked the same question a few months back. It was a real easy fix.........Bill

185 mowing

Postby bmbox » Sat Jul 01, 2006 2:46 pm

Me again,
I did make sure the back is higher than the front, maybe needs to be a little higher yet.
I appreciate all the comments, I am still waiting for my service manual, I am kind of curious if the governor is working correctly, am also thinking of replacing all the belts.

Thanks again

bmbox:

GSS-1411 Service Manual, is available on the Server to use whilst you are awaiting your own copy.

It should be a good read..

and BD.. I guess I missed the part about the snowblade... ahh duhhhhhh    So you are probably right. Funny, cause that little trick applies to just about all manner and forms of mower decks. I checkout my FIL's Craftsman.. lifted it up a bit in the rear and now it cuts better.. and it appears to be the same thing on my JD-111...

Go figure huh :?: :?: Cubs RULE :!:

A 185 lo-boy or a farmall cub. I currently own a 185, but am a little dissapointed in the way it mows and I am thinking of switching to a farmall cub.

I have a 154 and a 49 Cub. For mowing only over even ground the 154 works much better. I have the turf tires in front and can turn much sharper then the 49 Cub. The 154 is also more comfortable.
If you are mowing uneven ground the 49 Cub mower deck raises up higher then the 154. I just cut 3 acres of praire grass at 6-8" cut height with the 49, the 154 deck won't go that high.
It is alot of fun to use the 49 because of the vintage feel.

I have to say, if you're not satisfied with the power from a 185, you will be sorely disappointed with the power from a regular Cub unless it's been rebuilt to more modern specifications. The number-series Cubs, at least the 185 and subsequent 184 models, had improved engines that produced more horsepower than your standard Cub.

Remember that a 185 is about 30 years old. The engine could very well be tired and worn out, in need of a rebuild. Pushing snow takes a whole lot less power than running that 60" deck, so that's not really an indication of the condition of the tractor.

If the governor was not working at all, the tractor would simply sag and die under any load. Since it runs the mower deck, the governor is probably working well enough.
