Light Switch

Postby Bob Grieb » Thu Jun 22, 2006 11:31 am

I have a 1947 Cub with a 6 volt system. The light switch that was on it when I bought it is not the original or a replica. I want to purchase the type of switch that was on it originally. When I look at the parts manual it is not clear what I need.

Does anyone know where I can get the light switch??

Thanks

Bob

My oldest parts catalog, 1956, which is not the very first one issued, shows that tractors with serial number from 501 to 115402 use switch 1994019. I suspect that part number is no longer valid. The later parts catalog, 1979, shows number 1 994 019 as the switch.

Well, DUH! The numbers are the same except for the spacing in the later catalog.

Your 47 would have originally had a cut-out instead of a voltage regulator so the 4 position switch would be what you need. I may be wrong but I don't think that switch is available any more (new) and from what I have seen of the aftermarket replacements that are being sold - none of them look or work like the originals.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

However, you should be able to pick up a used working original from TM Tractor, JP Tractor Salvage or Ralph.

BigDog -

I have a voltage regulator ( mounted on the generator). At least I think it is a voltage regulator. Will that make a difference.

I also like Ketcham's idea about finding one on ebay.

Thanks guys

Bob - If you have a voltage regulator, you can use a 3 position light switch. That should be a little easier to find.

If you are registered on ebay you can setup a search so they will email you when something turns up.

Also, don't overlook a dash / hood support... sometimes they have the switch , run button and gauge still attached. (but the one I got that way had broken glass in the ammmeter, wrong run switch and the light switch didn't work... that is unless Rudi got it to work).

The later style (round ) is still available and costs about $30. I got one from a Cub Cadet dealer for my yeller Cub.

Buzzard Wing

When I go to ebay I usually search "Farmall Cub". Based on your note I searched Farmall Light Switches and I found some for early Farmall M tractors. They should work on the Cub I think. What do you think?

That would be a cut out relay. The voltage regular is mounted on a plate by the coil.

Bob:

Did a search on eBay.. and this is what I came up with.. unfortunately they are pricey and they are new aftermarket replacements. Usually though there are a number of switches both 3 and 4 Postion available.. a little patience and they do show up.

In the TC-37F Parts Catalog the following is listed:

Group 08 Electrical Page 18 Item #9Combination Rear Light and Tail Light - Cub Tractors w/serial no 210000& Below:

375 653 R92 Switch Assy Light. Replaces 354 309 R91 and 359 682 R92

This is also the same Part Number for Item group 5 on Page 19 and Item 7 Page 20.

John and Jamie have this listed on JP Tractor Salvage:

Light switch 25.00 need to know 3 or 4 position

I cannot access the Used Parts list at TM Tractor as they are closed until June 26th.

You will have to email Ralph at Ralph's Cubs to see if he has any.

I know this isn't exactly scientific, but if the "voltage regulator" is on the generator it may actually be a cut-out. I am still not all that sharp on the differences, but my 48 has a cut-out and my 47 which was modified for 12 volt has a voltage regulator but it is not on the generator.. in fact the generator isn't there.. it is an alternator :!:   :D :D

Here are the part numbers: Group 08 Electrical Page 02
356 936 R91 Generator Assembly 6 volt
1 116 766 Relay Assembly, generator, 46412D for tractos equipped with generator relay (cut-out)
121 578 C1 Regulator Assembly, voltage 6 volt, replaces 111 957 5

My Ellie-Mae has the 4 position switch, and that may be the one you want, but you will have to contact Jamie or Ralph above..

Hope this helps..

4 position light switches are available new, but they are not the original type. the 4th position on them is for a rear light instead of controlling charge rate as the original did.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
