I'm replacing the brakes and final drive seals on my 51 Cub and have removed the bull pinion shaft from the housing. The shaft and bearing are held inplace with circular spring clips. What's the secret for replacing the clips? I managed to pry them off for disassembly but am having a devil of a time geting them back in place. Any advice?
Also, The new seals are somewhat thinner than the old ones I removed. I read somewhere about replacing the thicker old seals with 2 thinner new ones. Is there any real advantage to doing this?
Thanks for your advice,
Dennis (51)

Dennis-
My mechanic uncle refers to things like that as "Bijesus Clips," as one has a tendancy to swear a bit during projects involving them, calling them by name a number of times as they fly across the room or fail to find their groove. Someone with experience will be along to counsel you on a solution soon, I'm sure. Good luck!

Hi Dennis,
I just finished the same project and also had trouble with the old retainer ring. I took the shaft and the bearing to a local auto parts store and purchased a "snap ring" to take the place of the old ring. With a pair of snap ring pliers, it is 100% easier to install and remove.

Dennis, is my face red. I do not have the number or size. The auto parts store took the shaft and bearing and selected a snap ring from drawers and drawers of different sizes. I should have asked for a identifying number or size specs for future reference but I did not.
Sorry about that.

The NAPA man sold me a 1051 Snap Ring, (2 for $1.78 + tax), that fits the shaft perfectly. The larger bearing to housing ring wasn't available at NAPA but the original wasn't too bad to get back in place.
A Harbor Freight Pittsburgh P31380 Retaining Ring Plier ($1.99) made installation a snap (pun intended), although you might have to smooth the tips a bit with a file like I did to get them to fit the ring.
Thanks for the assistance,
Dennis
