1979 Cub Questions

Postby Brandon Webb » Mon May 08, 2006 7:07 pm

I found a cub today, I believe it's a 79. It's square hooded, red, and has black Farmall cub decals. Not the long black stripe like on our 76 yellow lowboy but just a rectangular decal like the old style cubs. The serial number was painted over and the owner wasn't home, so I didn't go to scraping. Is it a 79 Possibly? Just wondering, Any pics of any 79's. It had a belly mower, and fast hitch. Thanks Brandon.

Brandon - 75's thru 79's looked like this:

Without a serial number or some casting codes you really won't know for sure.

That yellow cub looks just like our cub lowboy. So the question is did they make red cubs before this decal style? This tractor is red but the decals are not like the ones pictured on the yellow cub. Thanks Brandon.

The 63 - 75's were also square nosed but the grille was different and they did not have the full stripe on the side.
The Farmall's were red and the Internationals were yellow and white.
Check out the cub FAQs on ATIS and look at the serial number charts. There are pictures of each of the major appearance changes.

Ok, it looks just like the picture I found on ATIS (thanks bigdog) of the 63-75 with the small square black decal. The decal reads Farmall Cub and it's red, so could it be anywhere between 63 and 75? TM's little tractor id cards state that in late 63 the squared front end with yellow and white paint was introduced at farmall cub 222501. Would this mean because it's red it would possibly be an early 63? I will for sure go back and try to catch up with the owner. Thanks Brandon.

The last few months of '79 cub production, they once again rolled out the red paint for what they knew was to be the last Cub's ever produced. Updike's red Cub & Cub Cadet book has this on the last page or two.
'49 Cub, '58 LoBoy,'61 LoBoy, '61 Modified LoBoy, '61 Customized LoBoy, way to many attachments, '22 Centerdoor Sedan, '24 Ford T Roadster, '25 Ford TT, '24 C Cab, '13 Touring, '24 Model T Snowmobile,

Red Cubs were built between '47 and '79.

The real late Cubs were KEY start (no start button switch) and had a lock out solenoid (?) under the floor pan (?).

Mine has a key (replaces the pull sw) and a button for the starter (no pull rod). http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y40/Bu ... 347451.jpg

Yep, just because it's got a square hood doesn't mean that it's a '79. They made square hood Cubs from '63 through to the end.

...and just because it's red doesn't mean that it's a '79, either. There is no law against re-painting tractors with whatever color you want. In fact, my '67 is getting a coat of red paint and INTERNATIONAL hood emblems off a 140 to make it look more like what I think a Cub in 1967 should've looked like.

Really hate to contradict the mighty BD, but every square-hood Cub was yellow and white from the factory, with the exception of the last '79s, and perhaps some of the first from '63 and '64. Red ones are generally repaints; the brush marks on the hood generally give it away

I'm not even sure if there was a Farmall designation for square-hood Cubs. My Cub manual, printed in 1971, shows "International Cub and International Cub Lo-Boy." There was a point where Farmall was dropped, even though we still refer to the later "Hi-Boy" Cubs as Farmalls. IH completely dropped the Farmall moniker on all its tractors in 1976 with the black stripe '66 series.

Actually, Farmall was used on the 140's to the very end in 79/80. It was located on the 140 decal, like the big tractors had been using, not the big hood decal.

I have always assumed they dropped Farmall from the Cub sooner so it would fit in with the Cub Cadet line.

Red Cubs?

Postby gitractorman » Tue May 09, 2006 10:19 am

I have got to disagree with Matt there about all of the square-nose cubs being yellow/white from the factory. While IH did decide that the standard color for them would be yellow/white, IH did offer red as a factory option, along with a bunch of other colors, for municipalities and govt. agencies. I have a factory red, 1977 IH Cub, see this link. It is all original, other than a few touch-ups and items that I have painted to fix/repair rust.
