STARTING PROBLEMS

Postby Clem » Sun Apr 16, 2006 3:07 pm

HI GUYS. I am still having problems getting my tractor to start easily. Up until a week ago the tractor would start without even having to choke it. Last week when low idling it stalled and would not start. Since then it will start but only when I remove the muffler and tap on the exhaust pipe and manifold. Even then shifting in 3rd gear is a task as well as stopping and then going. After running it for 45 minutes I pulled into my drive and put it in nuetral, it stalled out and I needed to tap on the manifold again to start it. What is the problem?

Clem,

You need to check for fuel flow and spark as soon as it stops running. Engines die when the fuel stops or spark quits. Certain conditions may correct themselves while the engine cools down.

By the way, when was the last major tune up?

Tapping on the manifold would also affect the carb. See this post;

Sounds like the float may be sticking.

I think the problem is solved and the tractor is back to starting smooth. The problem: new spark plugs were garbage. I put the old ones back in and voila!

I ran into the same problem with a couple sets of champion D21s last year. set I bought later were ok. I think they may have gotten some bad ones from their overseas manufacturers, and your supplier may have still had a set of them.

Clem,

Your Cub starts without the choke because it is already too rich. Your D-21 plugs may be carbon fouled from the rich mixture. Are they black? The plugs may be fine, but the carbon deposit short circuits them. It may be time to work on the carburetor.
