Postby countershaft » Fri Apr 07, 2006 6:56 pm

Does anyone know if there is a way to establish a tractors serial number after the name tag has been lost ?

I want a serial # not the year of production . Even the engine # does not correspond to the serial #.

You can get in the ballpark, but not exact.

Solution , maybe

On the chat board last nite, it was suggested to get a serial number tag from a scrapped (sent to tractor heaven) tractor within the casting code numbers range and use it. Sounds like a good idea, since there is no other way to identify the original number .

what i did is use the engine serial number. not politically correct. after working with Wisconsin Hist society, members of this forumn, and thinking about it a long time that is what i went with.

I dont really care the actual serial number. just wanted others and self to rapidly assess approximate year of tractor. and the plate that i done, with the engine serial number does that. (all casting dates and engine serial number put unit to have been produced sometime in 59). a hard core cubber would notice the numbers being the same, and ask, and thats when i would explain the what and why of what i did. they just look funny without a plate.

A new plate with UNKNOWN used for the serial number can be used for appearance without having a guilty conscience.

If you can trace the tractor back to its original owner, that person may still be alive, and may still have the original bill of sale. If the tractor can be traced back to its original dealer, that dealer may still be in business, and probably still has a copy of the original bill of sale.

Early cub's serial numbers match. The block and the tag are the same. I don't know when they stopped doing this. All my casting codes are really close something like 10 days apart. Thanks Brandon.

I don't believe IH ever attempted to keep engine and serial numbers in sync on the Cub. If any match, it is coincidental.

thats what i was thinking Jim. In Ken's books he states that. He says they maybe close, but TO NOT USE the engine serial number as the tractor serial number.

I did on mine, as only a way to rapidly verify year. (all castings excluding new head matched the year - course the rest of the tractor doesnt - wrong hood, exhaust, seat).

So as is said many times on this site, countershaft, do it your way, its your tractor.
