1st welcome to the best internet site on the web for tractors.

2nd as to the color of your tractor
begining in 1960 federal yellow(#483) was available as an option. If i am reading my information correctly 1961 was the last year that red was standard color on the cub. Still available after 61, but special order. From my understanding IH did not place a primer on the their tractors, they put two top coats on them.

Since your grandfather was not the orginal owner, and is not aware of the history of the tractor, chances are a dealer or individual has painted it red to make it look like their other farmalls. and it eventually ended up with your family.

i'm sure others will be along to either correct my input  or verify 8) .
and to welcome you as welll.

thanks for the welcome and the info i would have to guess you are
right that it had to have been painted before grandpa got it but that
seems like a lot of trouble to go thru on a new tractor just to sell
i did not know that it was special order that year but then most of
the info on line that i have read is about older models
