Headgasket

Postby MikeCub64 » Fri Mar 17, 2006 5:58 am

Hey guys,

I need to put a new headgasket on my '62 Cub. Does anyone know if I need to use any type of sealer along with the gasket????

Thanks,
Mike

Not necessary but it can't hurt. The head bolts need sealer because they extend into the water jacket. If you don't they rust up and are a bear to get out the next time. Many people feel it is wise to use new bolts when you replace the gasket.

cooper coating the gasket is your preference. copper coating the bolts is in your best interest. new bolts is adviseable as bill said. i just had the engine on my demo redone, new head gasket and new head bolts. head bolts alone almost $50.00. expensive little toys arent they.

as the saying goes the difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.

Guys:

I think we really could use a How To article on doing the Head Gasket thing and checking out the head and pistons...

Any volunteers??

I would, but I don't know what I am doing in there? I just go by guess and by golly and cry help when needed....

I did a valve job and cleaned everything up on the last one I did. Put the head gasket on with no copper kote and it had a small leak. Just couldn't get it to stop. Took the head off and covered both sides of the gasket with copper kote and "Look ma no leaks".

I too used the Copper Coat
and you all saw what my compression numbers looked liked so I would say if you have it for the bolts use it on the head gasket as well won't hurt.
Will Copper Coat make it easier or harder to remove the gasket once it is used and you have to remove the head again in the future?
I would think it is a sealent non sieze correct
so therefore the gasket should come free right away.
Thanks
