I have one about cleaning the Radiator Out

Postby TOOLMAN » Mon Mar 13, 2006 12:30 am

What's the best way to clean the radiator out?
Remove it and have it boiled?
Flush it out with water?
Add Baking soda and freash water and then flush it out good?
I would like to know which is the best way
I feel the boil out at a radiator shop would be the best
But please let me know what you people think
Thanks Toolman     :? :? :? [/img]

You are right. Remember that it is a 50 60 year old Rad and you may just prove the need for it to be recored.

Hi Toolman. Are you having problems with the cooling or just want to check things out. Remember, if you try and remove the radiator from the housing, you're dealing with 18, 50-60 year old small bolts too. I've had some broken ones that had to be drilled out. If you're having cooling problems such as a leaky radiator, then go for it, but if you just want to freshen things up, I'd pull the plug on the bottom of the casting and give it a good flushing. That's if your plug will come out and you don't have problems like the posting about the stripped plug earlier  You may need some 007 abilities for this project :D Just my 2 cents worth, Rick

toolman, like rick said, I would only mess with it if you are haivng problems, or maybe if you are doing a complete rebuild. Before you pull it off though, check with the local radiatro shops. It doesn't have a bottom tank, and many will not mess with it. i have fouhnd a local place that used to do the radiator work for a locla green house that had nearly 20 cubs that were driven by summer help, al ot of radiator work. thye made a tank they soldered to the bottom of them ofr repairs.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Cheap try.

Washing soda. Replace coolent with two pounds of washing soda mixed with 3 1/4 gallon of water. Operate until tractor is hot then drain and flush. Source: B Farmall operators manual. Washing soda is available at the grocery store in the laundry detergent area. Costs about $2.00 for a 2 pound box.

While you are at it. Flush the block by removing the water outlet manifold from the block, flushing the block from the bottom. Also get the garden hose in the lower radiator housing.

I have no issues with the radiator just wanted to flush it out real good
To get all the gunk out

Arm & Hammer Washing Soda - you'll find it with the laundry detergents.

Latest Update
I drained the radiator
The drain plug is stuck solid so I used the lower hose as a drain point
Took the whole knockle out
I flushed out the system of all the antifreeze
and then closed her back up
I mixed about 2 lbs in a bucket and added it to the radiator
Ran engine until hot
Then drained it again
To my surprise the liquid came out very clean no sludge or crude at all just a little rust maybe flakes.
I then flushed her out for about 10mins more with fresh water The fluid was clear.
I will be putting new Head on tomorrow and button the rest of the cooling system back on and fill with fresh water and anti freeze.
how much antifreeze to water should I use what ratio
1 to 2? 1 part anti 2 parts water?
Thanks again Toolman

Washing Soda

Postby allenlook » Mon Mar 13, 2006 6:12 pm

They stock washing soda in my local hardware store between the left-handed screwdrivers and the plank stretchers.

Come to think of it, they keep *all* the mythical products in that aisle. :D

Seriously, I have *never* been able to find washing soda up here, so I always end up using baking soda in my electro tank. :? Seems to work OK.

Locally, places like Wal Mart and all the major grocery chains carry it in the detergent aisle.

Hi Toolman

Rember you have to premix your antifreeze before you put it in you cub. Becuse of the weight difference between antifreeze, water and no water pump. It will not circulate and overheat the engine.

Rick:

Thanks for the pic on the Washing Soda. I have a hard time finding that stuff here, for some reason it has gone the way of 40 mule team Borax.... can't find it anymore....

Hey, I guess that kind of dates me huh?

I think I might add that to the Electrolysis Tank PowerPoint presentation...

I appreciate.

Tony... make sure you get your antifreeze stuff pre-mixed. It will not mix properly in a thermosyphon system... and PLEASE DON"T ASK how I know OK :!: :?:
