Completed 12V conversion
I finished my conversion today. The cub starts fine, and the battery actually charges. My ammeter appears to be working properly. The Hitachi wasn't quite the bolt in replacement for a generator that I was expecting. The fan behind the pulley had to be trimmed to clear the upper bracket. I guess other than that, it worked just like the Hurley article said. I do wish that I had known that an ammeter was wired differently from the voltmeter used in the article, but I suppose I should have asked someone. Also, I used a piece of 3/8 threaded rod, instead of a long bolt with a spacer. I used jam nuts on the rod to hold the rod and alternator in place without putting stress on the alternator housing.

I didn't think that the hitatchi solution would be as easy as it sounded, but I'm glad it worked out well enough for you. As I understand, they are relatively reliable and trouble-free once you get them installed properly.
Myself, I like the original 6V systems, but I probably wouldn't convert a 12V purchase back to 6V either. Who knows, maybe I would. I felt alot better after putting my cub's electrics back "arights".

My Cub came with a 12v conversion so I can't say anything either way about the original 6v system except that Big Red always starts on the first pull, rain or snow or shine, and I can't ask for much more than that.
Good luck-
