Spent the last two days doing some minor repairs to my 49. The worst of them was to replace the manifold which had developed some rust through. Had bought a used one several months ago. Well, after getting the old one off and getting the new one on, I started it up with much coaxing and it ran like crap. I thought, what the freak could I have screwed up? Well, pulled off the plug wires to cylinder 3 and 4 and engine quit. Got to plug #2 and it was quite clear it was not firing. Pulled the plug, which was pretty dry, and saw plenty of spark on it. Scratched my head and pulled off the carb and manifold. Saw some fuel around the intake hole for cyl 1 and 2. Looked as if the gasket was not sealing correctly so I put it all back together and tightened the stud bolts a little tighter.
Started it back up and still missing like mad. So now I put the old manifold back on and it ran like a kitten. Duhhhhh. THEN, I looked into the intake hole for the front two cylinders and could see what looked like a wall of mud, probably from mud wasps. I guess this manifold was sitting around somewhere for a good while and the bees got to it. After giving it a good clean out and putting it all back together, PURRRRRRRRRRR!
Never know what can possibly happen. By the way, I really feared the rusted stud bolts but had sprayed it several times with
kroil over the past month and nuts came off like they were put on yesterday. Well, another good day with the Cub.

From what i understand that is not as an unusual occurance as someone might think.
As i was tearing down my demo cub, i noticed that there was cork in some of the implement bolt holes. I Asked the ALL KNOWING GW , he informed me that this was done @ the factory to prevent mud dobbers from nesting in them prior to the new owners using this option.
This is supposedly a way of telling a person that portion of your tractor is a virgin. to having seen an implement attached to it.

Dan, you brought back an embarrasing memory. I bought one of the first small gas powered weed eaters, probably about 30 years ago. I used it for nearly 20 years, with only minor repairs. One summer it wouldn't start. Had good fire, but wouldn't run. Carb parts were no longer available, so I just threw it on the shelf and picked up another one. A year or two later we were getting ready for a farm auction following the death of my father, and I thought I might as well throw it in one of the piles. Being the eternal optimist, I decide to give it one more try. when i did I realized it sounded funny. closer examination revealed a mud dauber nest in the exhaust. Cleaned it out and used it for 3 more years before it fianlly gave up the ghost for the last time.

My '63 still has an original cork or two in it! Also metal (seal) tag showing dealer name hanging on hydraulic line at pump.
