Starter bushing question.....

Should a bushing go here in this hole in the nose cone??? I think mine is missing it if there is.....

Yes. However, if it has run without one, the hole in the housing may be worn too much to hold the bushing.

Yes, there should be a bushing at each end of the starter.
The armature would be dragging a lot inside the starter with no bushing at the end of the starter.
Look at the armature and see if it is worn from rubbing on the metal inside the starter.
I don't know if you said before if the starter works.
Below is a page from the Cub parts manual showing the 6 volt starter.
The bushing is number 1 in the pic.
The armature, number 15, would rub on numbers 13, if there is no bushing in the end.

The armature can rub when the bushings are both there, and worn, the clearance is small between the armature and the shoes, the manual calls them.
They sell bushings and brushes online for the starter. NAPA might have them also.

It looks like in your pic that the hole in the starter end is worn, but it could be the pic making it look that way. If the hole is worn, the end could be put in a lathe, and the hole made slightly bigger, and a different bushing put in, with a bigger OD.
Or you could buy another starter.
The Cub parts manual pics show what a Cub originally came with.

The armature looks OK to me...I can see a little rubbing on the field coils ( not on the field coils themselves, but the metal pieces the field coils are around)...I tested the armature with a multimeter..and had continuity...around the commentator..

Yes, a bigger OD bushing might work. I wrote about it my post above.
The hole should be made round, if it isn't.
You didn't say if the starter works.
Rubbing inside can make the starter run slower than it should.

I cant get the starter to do anything but click and short out....I took it to a rebuild shop and he got it to work.... but he had some kind of set up. I took it home and tried it with jumper cables and 12v..and it just shorts out....so I took it apart...cleaned up the commentator....tested armature with multimeter....it needs new brushes and springs for sure.and obviously a new bushing in the nose..but I can't get it to spin...but the shop did....If I had a crank handle I wouldn't worry about it right now...lol

Crank handles are not hard to come by.

Blow up of the starer nose, the bushing hole appears to be enlarged on the bottom.

DB Electric has starters for Cubs. One year warranty.

I purchased a DB Electric starter in the past because their starter was less expensive than repairing my existing starter.

If you purchase a starter, keep your old starter for parts.

The brushes and bushings are common parts same as some Chevrolets in the 60’s and 70’s. Napa should have them.

I think I may take to another rebuild place like douglas battery and see what they can do...I did find a rebuild kit on Amazon for like 25 bucks bushing, springs and brushes....not sure if the springs are 100 percent match though. I may have a lead on a crank handle.

Hi,
I have a new bushing for the drive end of the 6 volt starter, I measured it's size. If you have a dial caliper, you can check the hole in the end and see if it is worn.
The bushing is thin material and looks like it may be rolled from flat material. The material has 2 ends that touch together.
It's size varies a little, it is made to be driven into the hole to make it a more precise size, I guess.
The OD of the bushing is .625" - .628"
The ID is .565" - .570"

The bushing has to hammer into the hole and be tight.
J P Tractor Salvage at the bottom of the page might have a used starter, if you need another starter.

If the bushing is really loose in the housing you might be able to JB Weld the bushing in the housing. Make sure both surfaces are clean and lightly scuff both surfaces with 80-100 grit sandpaper then apply JB Weld and clean up any excess and allow 24hr to dry.
