J B WELD

Postby Dusty B » Wed Nov 01, 2023 9:57 am

Has anyone had any experience with applying JB Weld over bronze welding? Have a cracked block that was repaired years ago with brazing that is beginning to seep anti-freeze! Would like to patch over it before repainting. If anyone has other alternatives/suggestions would appreciate that too. The weld has held for 40+ years so really can't complain! Thanks for any comments

If it isn't too much of a pain, I'd clean the crack and re-braze it. JB weld will hold for a while, but may pop loose after a lot of thermal cycling. It also will do nothing to keep the crack from propagating.

Worth a shot. I haven’t applied any over a bronze weld, but have applied some over a long crack in my bolster. Been there for about 10 years now and no problems. Get it really clean before applying and let it fully cure before operating

I too, think it’s worth giving it a shot. Make sure it’s very clean and if the brass is really smooth, sand a little texture into it.

I'd use a wire wheel or grinder or sand paper to rough it up. Then I would clean it with a etone or brake clean and then follow the directions on which ever version you get. It can withstand the heat. If your worried it will be too hot they make a version that's a high temp one and a bit different than the normal two part one that you can use on exhaust manifolds or heads.

The antifreeze will eat thru from the back side in time but for fix-n-flip, go for it!
