Sealer for Seals?

Postby JohnL (BlackJeep) » Wed Feb 08, 2006 6:57 pm

Hi guys,

I'm about to put new inner seals in the differential case and I was wondering if I should use anything around the body of the seal, or do you just count on the press fit of the seal in the case to be oil tight?

I was thinking of using a silicone sealant or something. Is this a bad idea?

The old seals didn't seem to have anything on them.

Thanks!

Blackjeep - nothing needed. They will work just fine. Just coat the seal lip with oil prior to assembly so the seal doesn't rub on a dry shaft.

BlackJeep,

Psssst...............bigdog has the cub locator pointed right at your cubby, this thing is so good.........he knows when you are swapping out the seals. the locator sweeps the globe every 10 minutes for cubs and people working on them. that's why he's soooo quick.....heeee knowwwwsss!

People have tried to hide them under tarps, in metal sheds, is stainless sheds, undergound, but it's no use, no use at all.

Excuse me BlackJeep,

Biggy.....so....I see you now have the Sub Zero Penetration Unit attached. Dooooh!
Could be though, that what you are seeing is merely a large Orange tarp, yeah, a very large Orange tarp, uhh, that I have covering all my rusted out lawnmowers, those mowers are really in bad shape, I covered them because some of the engines are still good, honest they are, that's why I covered them with that big Orange tarp, it's just the tarp you see. Maybe you should check the sensitivity on your SZPU, you're getting false readings. There's no Orange metal this far North, orange won't last up here, won't last at all, can't take the cold, no orange, orange bad.

EZ.... is your RailRoad orange correctly applied to the Cub??
Here is how to paint it: http://www.sandia.gov/isrc/F117.html to keep it under the radar...

Jeepster, the new seals I got from C&G have an orange (mmmm radar reduction material??) rubber like coating on the sides, I think that is intended to help seal it in the casting.

I took mine apart to find the noise in the transmission and so far have decided to replace all the bearings and races too! Figure it would be good for another 55 years that way. Looks like the water in there for years has taken its toll.

I bought myself a Christmas present, a 'seal and bearing driver' set on eBay that has come in infinitely handy for the final drive and transmission seal and bearing project. Well worth the $40. I would loan it to ya, but I am right in the middle of the project...... see if you can borrow or buy one, it sure makes life a lot easier.

Good Luck!
