Carb issue

Postby bobbylindholm » Mon Jun 12, 2023 11:45 am

Help! I have never rebuilt a carb. My 1960 loboy has an IH carb. I watched a you tube where they told about the idle tube. Mine didn’t have one! The you tube said if it breaks to drill it out from the bottom and then to tap new threads with a special threading bit. I poked the place where the idle tube should be and was able to push a needle through it. Now I’m wondering if I damaged something? Does my carb not need an idle tube?

That you tube video should be taken down. You DO NOT drill the bottom of the carb. Thread repair can esily be done from the inside. Not sure if you need a new idle tube unless it was already broke or missing. You do have to repair the damage done by poking a whole in the bottom.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Can you post pictures of the carb top and bottom so we can see what you have?

I posted a few pics on my earlier message. Hope they went through. There wasn’t an idle tube in the carb. This tractor has been in the barn and unmoved for about 15 years. It was my Dad’s. Maybe someone opened the carb in the past and lost the idle tune? I was hoping it was maybe not needed? What’s next? I appreciate your advice and patience with me as I’m new to this.

The long piece of the idle tube is still in the bottom of the carb. It's the little stub sticking up. You need to patiently spray it with a good penetrating oil before trying to remove it. They can be a chore to remove. The rusty piece with a hole in the middle has a felt plug above it. Can you post a photo of the carb top so we can see if the threaded end of the idle tube is still there?

Like Bob said the idle tube is located where the red circle is in this pic. The part on the bottom is just a drip hole for if it's flooded. I don't think you hurt it and have heard they will run fine without the idle tube.

They may run OK if the orifice end is still in the carb top. We don’t know if that’s the case here, yet.

Hi,
The Cub's IH carburetor is a simple carb.
They are saying above that the idle tube is still in the hole for it in the bottom half of the carb.
It should pull out. Don't drill any holes in the carb.
Below is a listing for a new idle tube at TM Tractor parts, you can look at the picture.
It has threads at the top of it and screws into the carb top half.
http://www.tmtractor.com/new/fl/384fp.htm

Clean all the passages in the carb with carb cleaner spray, and be sure they are open.
Blow them out with compressed air.
Wear your safety goggles when using the spray and the air.
The float level should be set exactly so the carb works right, and doesn't drip gas on the ground when sitting.
Don't disturb the round cover and the filter material in the hole, in your pic above. It looks in ok condition. It lets excess gas drip out if the engine is being cranked and doesn't run.
I sent you a PM, you get to it at the top of the page.

What I have done to remove the broken idle tube is use a number 1-64 nc tap that will thread in the hole in the tube. ( the hole is the correct size for the tap) Both time that I used the tap after being well lubed with a penetrating oil the tube became loose and was able to pull it out.Sure beats drilling it out. I also bought a screw that will thread in the tube after tapping which is something to pull on.

I went through this about a month ago and learned a few things that you can read about here. Click on this link to view it: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=115023 Use extreme care to preserve the threads in the top half where the idle jet screws into the hole. If you loose the threads the only fix (that I know of) is to helicoil the hole to get new threads. The drill bit and tap information is RH #42 (0.0935) (3/32”= 0.0938)
Tap 4-48 unf Do not use a power drill, use a hand drill only like a pin vise. Stan

If you have a left hand 1/16 inch drill bit you might get lucky and back the broken piece out (if it's still in the hole). Otherwise you can clean up the threads with the tap information that I posted above. Just remember to remove the air adjustment screw before working on it. Good Luck. Stan :hattip:
