Thrilled to mow with my new IH Cub

Postby Pigvet89 » Sat May 06, 2023 2:30 pm

I just finished mowing a 3.5 acre pasture. It’s plenty dry here in east central Illinois this May 6, 2023. The Cub just PRRS through grass 10”+ but it’s dry. It has a Woods 42C mid mount mower. My Cub is a 1964. New ignition, wires, basic carb kit, fluids, grease, coolant, belt adjust and I’m in heaven! It seemed to load up initially but carb rebuild after ignition solved.

I will say that at 67 I need to take some precautions. I need to trim some trees and use the Cub and trailer to get it done. Secondly it mowed in second no problem. Turning is a dream and surprisingly very tight. A 360 in second while mowing is thrill for me. But not much protection! The fender is diminutive and not much there, particularly on the right side.

The Woods deck just clips slings perfectly. Even though it’s a 42” cut, it doesn’t matter. It keeps on the tractor! I measured the fuel and I mowed for 1.5 hours. It looks like it used ~ 1.25-1.5 gal of gas? It had 3.5 gal in it. I measured with my stick and it had at least 2” left. I need to calibrate my stick. Or is there one available or a template to make?

Best regards

Charlie

I think someone here has posted a thread about it. Maybe search around? I'm interested too, maybe I will make one. But I don't really care how much is in there as long as I look and it's enough to do whatever task j am about to undertake .

If you come to The Bash the beginning of next month, I believe can can get a fuel stick already made up.

Full throttle, 3/4 gallon per hour is about average.
I have an excuse. CRS.

The woods 42 is probably the best all-around mower for the Cub.

This is a small field I was not able to get to for some time. Plus it was a little wet and 3 feet high when I cut it. The woods 42 will serve you well. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=105332&hilit=woods+42

I think I have a governor issue? cub runs good, cuts good but seems to be lacking in power when mowing, first gear is the only gear possible. 2nd would kill it fast.

better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it...( YES this includes CUBS! )

If it is tall thick (possibly wet) grass then 1st gear is the best you will get due to the deck getting clogged up and the engine running out of power.
The best or second method would be making a pass with the deck raised up half way then make a second pass lower….maybe not the drop down setting because the grass may be too much to handle.

Quite possibly you could go home with several.

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Eugene, your estimate is fairly accurate. I mow 5 acres, it takes app 3 1/2 hrs in 2nd gear with a Woods 59. I burn right around 2 1/2 gal of fuel. It used to cost me a quart of oil too until l replaced my rear main seal lol.
Why is there never enough time to do the job right, but always enough time to do it over. :?:

I just got a 1970 cub as well with a woods 42 and planning to mow this week. I was concerned with the grass being knee high, but these posts give me quite a bit of confidence. Thanks!
