PerTronix

Postby jobbyjim » Sat Mar 25, 2023 3:11 pm

I have a question about PerTronix Igniter modules. I read on their website that the module either works or it doesn't. Intermittent issues are not possible. If I have a bluish spark at a plug that means my PerTronix is working fine, correct? Thought I'd check with those on the site that have one of these units before I call the manufacturer Monday. Thanks in advance.

I have to say that I have been tempted to get an electronic igniter for the bigger tractors not for the cub since they seem to be pretty forgiving..still interested to hear how this works

Pertronics 6 Volt ignition modules are Voltage dependent. If the voltage drops below 5.9 it will not operate. Which can happen if you have a weak battery or you're pulling the battery down when cranking the engine

That was my experience with the on I had. it went bad after a few years. I converted it back to points after that

it appears the 12 volt systems are more reliable. judging by the comments I've seen here on the forum

agree with steve. i have not got them to work on my 6 volt cubs but they work great on the 12 volt cubs. and as aj wrote the points in a cub are forgiving. i have stopped using ignition parts fron the tractor websites due to reliability. I use napa for caps points and condensors and non mag rotors.

So, what is your issue with your Pertronix? As Steve mentioned, the 6volt unit is pretty fussy. They sometimes don’t fire while cranking but as soon as the pull rod is released, they fire up. 12 volt units, on the other hand, will work as expected. I have installed a bunch of these and I discourage installing them on 6 volt tractors.

Mine's a 12v. Having starting issues and am trying to sequentially rule out all factors that have been mentioned on this site. Pertronix hadn't been covered off and that is why I made the post.

I figured it out, it wasn't the Pertronix. The choke rod attachment arm was loose. Tightened it up and it fired right up.

Well, Sonny, my success with Pertronix installations speaks for itself. I’ll ditch the antiquated point every chance I get.

I'm with Sonny. Lately pertronics quality has suffered particularly marine ones. I suspect manufacture has been moved overseas to a place that can't even make solar lights work. They are a band aid as far as I'm concerned.
