Reinstalling starter on a 49 FCub

Postby staninlowerAL » Sat Mar 18, 2023 4:27 pm

I thought that installing the FCub starter would be a 5 minute job. NADA!! When attempting to reinstall the starter that was removed for repair, I can't seem to get enough room for it to slip into place. It's contacting the water return inlet before it will go into the bell housing. I don't remember having this problem when I removed it but maybe CRS has blurred my memory. Anyone had this problem? Or should I just remove the water return inlet and solve the problem? :? :?: Thanks! :) Stan

Only problem I’ve encountered is not holding my mouth just right and trying to install it not rotated to right position

Is it the same starter you took off?

Is this a 6V or 12V starter?

Yes, it's the same 6v starter that was removed. I tried repositioning the ring gear a couple times but it still contacts the water inlet before I can get it level to slip the nose into the bell housing.

Tilt the front down slightly and once it clears the water jacket you should be able to level it and slide it in. I don't believe it will go in if it is level at the start.

I had a problem with a 6-volt stater I purchased new from Steiners on a 49 that I just could not get to fit. It was longer than the original. I ended up getting the old one rebuilt.

Thanks everyone. I'll take tmays advice and try to hold my mouth differently  and make another attempt to get it installed. If the problem still exists, I'll check the dimensions on another 49 FCub and 57 LoBoy that I have. Both of them are 6v starters. Stan

If all else fails remove the coolant manifold. Time to flush the engine block and radiator base anyway
I have an excuse. CRS.

It may not need to be removed. Just loosened up.

I have read that the longer starters (typically 12v, but maybe just a later longer body even if 6v) require the R2 of the coolant inlet IH #251430. I have seen both R1 and R2 of #251430 listed at various online vendors. Phill

My only thought is, since it is the same starter taken off, it has to go back on with minimal problem. The water jacket should not have to be taken off or loosened.

Update: After several more attempts by myself and others at LA Cubfest with no success I removed the two bolts on the connection of the return to the block. No further issues and the hose was flexible enough that it did not have to be loosened. Since the mag was being removed anyway it was the eas way to get it done. The length of the 6v starter is the same as some others that I have. Stan
