The Cub will run on two working cylinders and two dead cylinders.

Check to see if all the spark plug wires are connected to the correct spark plugs.

Read up on how to static time the ignition/engine.

Though not the right way to do it, you could always time the engine by ear. Loosen the bolt holding the distributor tight and rotate the distributor a little bit each direction while it is running. Rotate the distributor until the engine sounds smooth and has a higher idle.

As I said, this is not the correct way to adjust ignition timing, but if doing this makes it run better, then you've made progress.

Hi,
Thanks for saying what you have done to the ignition system.

Setting the timing is not hard to do using a timing light.
The distributor base originally has 2 clamps holding it in position.
1 clamp is on the engine side of the unit.
They originally have bolts with 1/2" heads, and use a 1/2" wrench.
I use an open end wrench up and down between the unit and the engine. You can only turn the bolt a small amount at a time.
Don't leave both clamps loose with the engine running.
Below are pics from TM Tractor, the bolts and clamps can be seen in the pics, in about the middle of the unit. :)
