Steering gear removal

Postby Schu » Mon Nov 14, 2022 12:10 am

I am the proud new owner of a ‘48 Cub. For most part it runs well and doesn’t seem to have any serious issues. I am undertaking cosmetic restoration and fixing a few items. One item is a leaking steering box. I removed the front axle and steering shaft. I have removed the 5 bolts holding the lower bolster. My problem is that it seems the steering gear will not fit through the opening of the housing. It’s the only way in or out, so I think I am missing something simple. Any help appreciated

Did you remove the steering wheel shaft from the housing? There is a thrust washer on the bottom end that can fall off in the oil. Don’t lose it.

If you meant you can’t get the shaft out of the housing there could be some crud built up around the shaft.

Steering shaft with worm gear is out.
The round steering gear is the problem. It will not clear the hole to drop out

It should drop straight down. Is the old hard gasket holding it up. There is also a guide pin that it could be stuck on. A little Kroil or PB Blaster should help if that is the case.

That’s what I thought. But it won’t drop. I will work on it again tonight

Did you also remove the cotter pin and castellated nut on the bottom of the vertical shaft? I'm not sure if that would keep the gear from dropping or not. Pages 3-11 to 3-14 in the GSS-1411 Service Manual show the procedure with a parts blow up.

I did not. I did read the service manual and it did not say that removing the nut and pitman arm is necessary. I will probably do so as the next step. Getting the bolster casting off the shaft will lighten the load.

You shouldn't need to remove the nut/arm. The weight of the casting is probably putting a side load on the shaft. Lift up on the rear of the casting and it may fall out.

Is the alignment pin still in the upper housing? If not it may have fallen down and binding against the steering gear. Did the lower thrust washer fall of the end of the worm gear? Also could be jammed into the steering gear.

Well, I got it apart. Very tight fit and needed some persuasion. I think I will open it up a bit with a rotary file before reassembly.
