Radiator Bolts

Postby goxu1 » Sun Nov 13, 2022 5:03 pm

Should I be using stainless bolts into the bolster to mount the radiator or grade 8 ?

Not much stress in holding the radiator on.

Grade 2 would probably work!
Grade 8 is serious overkill!

Why not just use the original farmall screws?

If you don't opt for stainless, I'd suggest coating them with anti-seize to make it easier for you or the next guy in 30-50 years to remove them.

If the bolts you took out are in good shape I would reuse them. Chase the threads on the holes and bolts and use some never seize.

If you broke some use grade 5 on the ones you broke and chase the threads on the holes and bolts and use some never seize.

I do use stainless on the battery box, the hood, and a few other places but not everywhere, and no place that needs a strong bolt.

I did buy a set of stainless bolts from TM a while back and was planning on using them , but recently read a post on Facebook by some guy saying never use stainless....it was referring to the fact that they could "gall" and end up snapping if you weren't carefull

Never seize helps to prevent this from happening.

Stainless on stainless will gall (such as using a stainless nut with a stainless bolt). Never heard of stainless galling if the mating threads are carbon steel or cast iron.

I agree. Early on I replaced a lot of bolts with stainless and they worked well. I have backed off where I used them for originality. If the bolts are Ok I clean them lube and reuse them.

I saw that post on Facebook. I think the person was being a little one-sided and did not give the pros and cons of stainless.

Can tell you my experience. I put a radiator on with stainless bolts about 12 years ago. This was on cub that needed a lot of work. Life happens and it sat outside untouched all that time until about a month ago. Needed to remove the radiator and bolts were no problem removing. So stainless for me from now on in this application.
And I agree with Bill that stainless bolts in stainless holes can be a problem. Especially if you try to remove if they are hot
