49 Cub oil pressure relief valve

Postby 5 Forward » Wed Sep 21, 2022 9:43 pm

I am rebuilding a 49 Cub engine. The previous topic was piston installed backwards. I decided to renew all the internals rod bearings, mains, and rings. In its earlier life when running it had extremely high oil pressure. It completely maxed out two different oil pressures gauges. I believe part of the oil pressure issue is the pressure relief valve. I cannot get the valve out of the block. I have sprayed degreaser and carb cleaner and even a bore brush to get the valve out of the block. I can get it to about 1/8 in of the threads where the plug threads into the block. I would like to get it out to clean all the oil passages. The engine is pretty sludge up on the inside. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,
While the oil pressure valve is apart is a good time to check the spring. The valve needs the right spring to work right.

Below is a listing at TM Tractor for a new spring, you can look at the pic and see if the spring you have looks like this spring.
I have a new spring, it is 3" long.

They have said on here that the valve needs to be free moving in the bore it is in.

Below is a listing for a new valve, it should look like this. Sometimes the valves are scored on the OD from use. :)

the valve is just a hollow sleeve, kinda like a piston, take a piece of small scrap would you can drive inside it to make a handle to yank it out

The dowel with the wedge worked the first time. I spent hours trying to get it out. Thanks for the info midmo and Barnyard.
