Fuse Holder Removal

Howdy All!

Working on stripping down the 53 Cub for paint and trying to get the electrical out. I am a bit stumped on the fuse holder. Suggestions on removal?

While I was in there I found some pretty bare wires. Looks like it is for the lights but could also explain the no charge issue. Heat shrink it up or is there more of an issue you all have seen from this sort of failure? i.e. am I in it for a new wiring harness?

This is what the holder looked like before a PO soldered the leads to the lugs. You'll have to un-solder them to get the nut off.

You could unsolder it or just clip the wires close the fuse holder.

Depends on the fuse holder's condition. Are you going to resue it or rewire the tractor?

If clipped, it's a simple repair. Unsolder on bench or purchase a new one.

Do you own a wiring terminal kit? Inexpensive from Ebay or Amazon.

Hi,
Below is a listing at TM Tractor for the fuse holder for the 6 volt system.
The wires come with it to connect it.
The nut has a cutout place on it so it will go on over the wire on the side of the holder, as I remember.

It says it doesn't come with a fuse, the 6 volt system uses a 20 amp fuse for the lights.
It tells it in the Cub operator's manuals, in the Specifications section.
Don posted the pic of the holder for the 12 volt system. TM Tractor has those also.

If yours has the nut with the cutout place, you could try bending the wire on the side of yours in, so the nut will come off over the wire.
It may be too old and break, I don't know, you can decide if you want to try it.

If you look closely at the image of TM Tractors' fuse holder, you'll see the "cutout" that Glen referred to that allows the nut (after it's unscrewed all the way) to slide over the soldered wire, assuming the blob of solder isn't too large:

Just my opinion, but the wiring on most of these tractors is older than we are. Or near to it. Bad wires start fires. Replace everything if you can. Buy a pre-made harness or build it yourself. Personally, I am rebuilding mine myself. All marine grade wire, top grade connectors, and every connection with heat shrink. I want every connection bulletproof and waterproof if possible. Also looming it in 500F heat resistant and abrasion resistant loom. I don't want to touch this again in my lifetime.

Bro, I'm doing this ONE time, and that is only out of necessity! The parts alone cost more than any harness I've seen for these tractors.

No personal experience but all the reviews on this forum have been positive as I recall. At least one of them will build it for your specific tractor if you furnish detailed ID info.

I recently installed a new harness from Brillman on a Super AV. The harness was very well made. Every wire was labeled and it came with instructions that made the job easy. Only took about an hour to install. They aren’t cheap but for me it was well worth it.

Brillman, Porch Electric, AgriServices, all have good product.

I think the ones TM sells are "OEM" even.
