Front main seal checking fit

Postby pett3227b » Mon May 09, 2022 1:52 pm

I am working on my 47' cub and will soon be putting on a new front main seal. I have purchased my seal from steiner. I am wondering if there are measurements or another way to make sure that the seal fits tightly and will not leak oil? I have calipers. I have heard that cubs are known to leak from the front seal. I also have the old seal and to my knowledge it was not leaking before from the front seal. Thank-you

You should probably have a speedy sleeve on hand.
The original seal could have worn a groove in the pulley that will not allow the new seal to work properly.

TM Tractor has the seal and sleeve as a kit;

I did one for a forum member a number of years ago, at Cubfest Northeast. I suggested he get the seal and sleeve kit from TM. There was a groove worn in the seal surv=face, that looked like it should have an "O" ring, in it. Without the speedy sleeve, we wouldn't have been able to complete it .

Okay I need a sleeve and a matching front main seal. I tried to purchase one from tm tractor but it is currently unavailable. Does anyone know anywhere else that would have the same sleeve and seal? Thank-you

call TM. The website is not always correct about parts availability

If you've got the front pulley off, inspect the surface that the seal lip rides on for wear. If a groove is not worn into the sealing surface, you don't need a Speedy Sleeve. Also, if I remember correctly, the new seal has a thinner cross section than the original seal. If I'm correct about that, the seal may be able to be set to a depth so the new lip seal doesn't ride in the groove created by the old seal.
