So I’ve got a crack on the front right side of my cub block. It appears to have been welded before. Is there anyway I could fix this crack to keep it from cracking worse?

There are several programs (appa) you can use to reduce the file size of photos. Irfanview is one of them.

Re: Cub Block Repair
Welding cast iron at a stress point does not usually provide satisfactory results IMHO. You can probably source a good block for less than a professional welding repair. Either way, there's a lot of work to swap the parts from the cracked block to another one. The up side is a chance for a quality total engine rebuild that will probably outlast your lifetime.

Perhaps, if not broken clear through and no oil or coolant leaks.

Back to the original question, a number of the Cub engines have been reinforced with an external brace. The braces have been custom-made by some of the farmallcub.com members. Here is an old topic that discusses, has pictures, and suggests what may be done to get a pair.

Bezirk is the member that most recently made some. I have no idea whether he is still willing to make up a set. (It has been a couple weeks since he has been signed in here.) You might post an inquiry in The Vine and see if anyone can help you out.

Kyle, you should check with J P tractor salvage (forum sponsor) they used to offer a reconditioned block, cleaned, inspected and bored, complete with new pistons and rings for a very appealing price, $750 a couple years ago. An absolute bargain, in my book. Call and ask if they are still available.

Re: Cub Block Repair
Typically, if you have a crack in a block to repair, if you find the very ends of the crack, you can drill a small (1/8") hole at each end of the crack to stop the crack from continuing. Once the holes have been drilled, the crack can be cleaned and prepped for welding. Cast iron usually requires a preheat for welding or brazing to keep from forming additional cracks. Welding old cast iron can be pretty difficult.
Another thing to consider is if any cracks are internal, there may not be any way to access those cracks rendering the block junk. Another block might be the best route to take.
If you do weld the block, I'd suggest pressurizing the block coolant passages to verify there are no internal leaks.

I have a block in Kansas. The engine turned ok when I stripped it. I know nothing about it. You can have it if you come get it.

What a deal!! If gas wasn't sky high it would of been a good time to head across country grab a needed part and met a fellow and head back. I have no idea where the OP is maybe he is close?

Profile says Indiana. Agree, it's a good deal. I once drove from LA (lower AL) to KY for parts and they were not free!
