Question about oil change

Postby tomjan357 » Fri Jan 20, 2006 7:26 am

I was reading another post and there was mention of priming the oil pump thru the filter housing. I am doing winter service on my cub and replacing the radiator. I drained the oil a couple of weeks ago and have not refilled it yet. Will I need to prime the oil pump? If so how do I know that it's primed?
If it ain't broke I didn't touch it

Most likely you will not need to prime it. Watch the oil pressure gauge when you crank it over with the switch turned off. Crank it for several seconds and you should see some oil pressure start to build. If you have pressure, no problem. You could start it and let it run at idle for a few seconds and see if pressure builds. But if it is in need of priming that will cause more wear on the bearing surfaces.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Tom,

A tip:

Add the oil, but before you add the new filter... pump a few squirts of oil into the (about 1/4") hole in the inside of the filter housing. It's directly below the allen plug in the deck surface. Then, before installing the filter, crank the engine a bit with the ignition off. If the pump is working you will see oil spurting from the hole right away. It won't be necessary to wait for the filter housing to fill before you see action on the gauge that way.

That wait for the housing to fill can be hard on the nerves, and hard on the engine if it really needs priming.
