Cub transmission rebuild questions
Good day all!
Last year I bought 3 cubs and a bunch of matching equipment for them. Of the 3 cubs none of them ran, the plan is to make 2 good cubs from the 3. This is proving to be more challenging than I anticipated. They are local cubs from Southern Maryland where mostly they were used in tobacco country to cultivate and to mow around the fields. Apparently they were used for other much more challenging work as well, as I have discovered 2 broken transmission housings, 2 broken final drives, a broken front bolster, and a broken axle knee. One of the cubs was already incomplete so now I am in a position of having to source parts. Fortunately there is a local man with dozens of parts cubs laying in his parts yard, so I will be paying him a visit very soon.
On to the present situation. I started with the red cub. The transmission has excellent gears but the housing is broken. The parts cub has a good transmission with rusty gears so I have disassembled both transmissions down to the bare housing. I will clean the good housing and install the near perfect gears from the other transmission. The bearings from the red cub were all very good, the bearings from the parts cub fell apart when I removed them.
So I said ALL OF THAT to ask this: Is there anywhere I can buy all of the bearings and seals for a cub transmission in one kit?
The green cub is actually yellow, being brush painted green and the only red showing being on parts that were replaced. It is a '49 with magneto. I am going to tackle that one next. It is in better shape than it looks in the photo. I also included a photo of my other toys, a Kubota B7100 and a John Deere GP.

No complete kit that I've ever seen. TM shows and sells most of the parts.

What's that white stuff on the green Cub? You don't see that very often on your end of the state. Is the photo of the GP at Tuckahoe?

Hi,
1949 Cubs were red, as far as I know.
I'm not sure if Jim B., or someone has said if there were other colors offered on the earlier Cubs.
I think they have said on here that yellow was not offered until about 1960, but I'm not sure.
You could remove some paint down to the metal, and you can see if red is the 1st color on it.
There could be redish primer on some of the parts, under the red paint.
It looks like you have a yellow and white Cub in the pic, to the left.
They began making them yellow and white in mid 1964.

Yeah we don't get snow much anymore. I think that photo was taken at the Somerset Pasture Party. I also took it to the Shenandoah show, as well as the Maryland Steam Society in Upperco, Md. this year.

It's definitely yellow. No sign of red on the castings or fenders. When I start to strip that cub I'll take photos and post pics. I had read somewhere that IH would paint a cub any color you asked for more $$. Another option is the front bolster (and hence SN tag) could be a replacement from an early cub. I am probably going to paint it back yellow but I'm under no illusions of it being special, it's still just a cub, possibly parts from 2 or more cubs. We will see.

That cub doesn't belong to me.

I'll echo Bob in answering your original question. I've never seen a kit or package including all the bearings for a Farmall Cub tranny.
That's a nice JD GP. It's a dandy.

Thanks. I will just have to order them separately. Thanks for the compliment on my GP. That was my first restoration. The cubs are next, then hoping to get ahold of a JD 720 diesel for my next project.

Most definitely! That’s a real fun tractor, it was one of the oldest tractors at the shows I attended this year. Hand starts usually on the 2nd pull but sometimes it can be quite a cantankerous beast!

Thanks. Individual parts it will be then. Do you guys think I should replace all the bearings and seals? I mean, some of them look great, but I suppose I should just replace them all while it is apart?

It depends on what you want to do with the tractor. If you're just using it to fool around and don't want to sink a bunch of money, selectively replace things. If you want a reliable, heavily worked tractor or a pristine, leak-free parade queen, spend the money and replace everything.

Opinion. Replace the seals and all questionable bearings.

Re: Cub transmission rebuild questions
Hi,
Here is info to help you identify when parts of the Cub were made.
There are casting date codes on the larger castings on Cubs. They tell the date when the parts were made. They use a letter for the year.
Below is info from TM Tractor showing what the codes are.
http://www.tmtractor.com/id/id_004.htm
The info below shows where the codes are.
The code on the clutch housing is usually partly behind the clutch pedal.
The code on the last part on the page, the steering gear housing, usually can't be seen with the tractor assembled.

Re: Cub transmission rebuild questions
Some of the Cubs had different bearings inside depending on the age of the transmission housing. Do a little research before ordering parts so you get the correct bearings. The casting numbers end in R1,R2,R3 and so on up to R8. A parts manual is nice for research.
