Cub Governor installation question

Postby countershaft » Mon Jan 16, 2006 7:24 pm

When replacing the govenor( after re-building), is it possible to get the shaft to mesh with the idler gear without getting the marked teeth alligned on the crankshaft gear ? In other words , do the gears have to match these marks for the gears to fall together and close the housing up tight ?Or will they do so , without being in the right plce?

Countershaft - It can be assembled out of time so you need to watch closely.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Thanks BD, I thought so. Couldn't find those single marks, not without removing the seal and that seems like a complicated job. I guess I will have to take the distributor end off too , to get to the seal. I had removed the governor(for re-building) and the housing all from the front end side ( closest to the fan belt) and replaced it the same way. Gears fell into place well enough. Timing . well that's another matter thanks

Finding dot on back of idler gear

Postby John Lane » Mon Jan 16, 2006 11:35 pm

There is an easy way to find the mark on the back of the idler gear without removing the distributor and oil seal. I did this recently by lining everything up as it should be with the #1 cylinder on top dead center and then determining within 2-3 teeth where the dot should be. At this point you need something that will give you good tactile sensation, like a very sharp dental explorer. All you have to do is scratch around a little where you expect to find the dot and soon the tip of the explorer will fall into what feels like a big hole, just as if it were finding a cavity in your tooth, and there will be no question about it. Then take a little paint and mark the front side of the tooth on either side, and you have it made.
