Hardware List

Postby David » Sun Jan 15, 2006 10:19 pm

Hi -- does anyone have a list of all the hardware eg nuts and bolts on the Cub? I am doing a restore job, and was thinking to order all the nuts, bolts, washers etc from McMaster, before I start putting it back together. I can go back to the manual, but was thinking that somebody may have already put the list together. Thanks

This is just my opinion. Clean up all of the nuts, bolts and washers that came off the Cub and are not damaged. Reuse.

Replacing nuts and bolts gets expensive in a hurry.

Most local hometown hardware stores handle nuts and bolts - and you can purchase exactly what you need.

David, I'd have to agree with trying to salvage what hardware you have and only replace what you have to. You are sure to run into some of the bolts and such that are hard to find, if not impossible.

If you have a Harbor Frieght store near you (or you can order from the online at: http://www.harborfreight.com) I'd pick up a rock polisher.

I got one for about $30 at Harbour Frieght and use it to clean up the small parts and such. I throw in the bolts/washers/nuts along with some sand, and let it run. It'll remove almost all of the paint and rust without you having to do the manual labor yourself.

Mike - that is a great idea on the rock polisher. Thanks!

Hi David,

I have made an Excel spreadsheet covering the entire parts manual
except for group eight (8). electrical stuff. If you have excell I would be
glad to sent it to you in e=mail [460k file] or I can sent to you on a CD.

If you do not have excel I can so a sort, post to a blank sheet in the workbook and snail mail it to you.

Either way just let me know and I will have it off to you in a day or two.

Nuts and Bolts.
I think I agree, I would keep the originals. I did for Baby, we have a good reason because american thread nuts and bolts are not easily available here now in Europe.
However when doing certain nuts up I had quite a number of the split lock-washers break. They are of their nature made of a brittle spring steel.
For the Lanz restoration and future cubs I have decided to buy a stock of new lock washers and replace all that I can.
0.02€ worth,
Pat

I replaced a lot of em on Rufus and did it in little quantities and it cost a fortune! Didn't help that a lot of the fasteners were stainless.

This Cub I am only replacing the ones that are badly rusted.

Haven't tried the rock polisher yet. But I have been cleaning them up with a wire wheel and priming and painting the heads and nuts.

I did buy boxes of the common lockwashers as they are just too hard to clean and I think after 50 years they have lost a bit of their 'locking' capabilities. Not to mention I am finding a number of broken ones..

Also it is a good idea to chase the holes with a tap before you put the bolts back. Most everything is in a common tap 'kit' .

For painting the bolts I just drill holes in a box or piece of cardboard and paint the heads.

Hey Buzzard, good idea, now I know what to do with all the shoe boxes that Noëlle is keeping for the "It'll come in one day, even if I never use it!" reasoning!

Harbor Freight Rock Tumbler

Postby allenlook » Tue Jan 17, 2006 8:53 am

I have one of those Harbor Freight Rock Tumblers, the two-drum version, and it breaks a belt every two days or so... I ordered a half-dozen replacements for the original, thinking it was a bad belt, but they've all broken as well.

They're cheapo rubber belts with no fabric in them, is there a replacement from Gates or something?

Shoe box is perfect Pat!
I am still using the same USPS 'priority mail' box for the bolts on the red Cub. It is pretty well primed and painted at this point., but you can still see some yeller.

allenlook, I would try to make something out of a bike inner tube or something, I don't know what they look like so this could be a very bad idea, but it worked, kinda, with a Vandegraff Generator...
