Wont start...

Postby Dadsfarmalls » Sun May 23, 2021 2:30 pm

So my 65 Cub that I have been using around the house for the last few years for mowing and plowing wont start. I've pretty much had it start up on the first or second crank since I got it going a few years back - and then I let my buddy borrow it to mow his overgrown lawn because his mower had broke. Aaaannnnddddd... now it doesn't start. So I got it back home and today I'm going to go through and try to figure out whats wrong and get it going again. So this is my plan of attack (in order), let me know if there is something else I should be looking at as well.

Make sure battery is charged up
Check and clean battery posts and connections
Make sure I've got correct gas flow to carb.
Check and clean spark plugs and make sure they have spark
Check rotor and points
If all that checks out then Ill probably drain the gas tank to make sure there wasn't any issues with the gas he put in it.

Note to self - don't loan out tractor again

Be a little more specific...

Does nothing.
Tries, but won't turn over.
Turns over, but won't fire.

Give us a little more to help diagnose.

Well, Sounds like your battery connections are clean!

Its either no spark!
No gas!
Or no compression!

You have spark?
Fuel blockage?
Did you turn the gas on?
Worn out engine with no compression?

Good luck!

Ps, I almost NEVER click on a youtube video thats less Than a minute long!

I watched the video again, and saw your key switch in the off position while you hit the starter button!

Try it again with the key in the run position!

Sounds like it’s spinning faster than either of mine. If that’s the case...low compression..

But...my money is on lack of spark...key not allowing power to the coil. Bad condenser. Bad coil.
If it won’t hit on starting fluid, it’s a spark issue. If it hits on starting fluid...fuel...plugged main jet??

Well I think I found the problem... didn't hit me to check it until you said I had the key in the off position. The switch is actually in the on position in the video. Looks like somehow the ring that tightens the switch to the housing was loosened and so the entire switch got turned... picture shows the result of that on the back of the switch, looks like my buddy snapped all the wires off

I was just starting on the spark plugs, I'll go ahead and clean those up anyway and then try to reconnect the switch and see if she goes.

Thank you!

they look pretty rotten to start with, switch spinning around broke the rotten connectors off

Hi,
Below is a listing at TM Tractor for a new ignition switch like a 1965 Cub came with, you can look at the pics.
I can't tell what it has in your pic, but the original has slip on connections, it looks like in the listing.
I don't know if you need a new switch.

http://www.tmtractor.com/new/el/816fp.htm

The Cub parts manual says it needs a 365502R1, nut switch mounting, and a 375431R1, washer switch mounting. You could try buying them at Case IH, or figure out the size and buy them at a store.

Below is a page from the 1965 Cub operator's manual, showing the 12 volt dash in the upper pic. :)

the switch is not the factory type you have, the original has a flat spot on it so it could not spin in the hole like this one did
