Well I finally got my little red mistress all painted and assembled. Went completely through everything and she's a beautiful piece of machinery. Bump the rod and she fires even before the starter completely rotates. Took her out on the maiden run and all functions perfectly. Pulled back in shop and noticed a bit of oil so I started checking gaskets and bolts then the hooker showed me the Crack running from oil pan flange up behind coolant nipple almost to governor housing. Had welder come check it out and now the disassembly starts.
As this is structural section have any of you guys had issues with this and the long term strength.
Just looking for opinions and experiences
TIA

Re: Cracked Block
There is a gentleman on the forum that makes and sells block stiffeners (struts). I believe his handle is Bezirk

Re: Cracked Block
Hi,
Some people on here have said they had trouble with the engine block cracking on earlier Cubs, at the right front mounting.
Some people replace the block with one that is not cracked.
JP Tractor Salvage at the bottom of the page probably has a block.
Below is a pic of another cracked one.

Re: Cracked Block
The crack is to the left of the empty bolt hole, and under the closest hose clamp. It looks like a pretty smooth welding job.

Re: Cracked Block
Hi,
The crack is vertical in the corner where the blackish oil is.
It is an open crack, not welded, I think.
The man that posted the pic said it was cracked, I think.
It is hard to see, probably easier on a computer with a bigger screen than a phone.

Re: Cracked Block
I'm not sure that was ever cracked. If it was, it is an awful good weld.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Cracked Block
It is covered in paint.
And there is a good chance the weld could have been dressed up by grinding!

Re: Cracked Block
I have found that this is a common issue. I have torn down the front end AGAIN and picked up some NI rods today. I will be welding it tomorrow evening and then building a strut support for it once reassembled. I would like to keep it all together as original if possible.

Re: Cracked Block
Hi,
The pic I posted above is from Rockfarmer's post about restoring his Cub.
Below is his post, the pic is on page 4, mostly down the page. His next post after the pic says he was going to replace the block.
He doesn't say if it was cracked in the corner.
If it wasn't cracked, that is where they usually crack.
His post has many pages, and is good reading, if you are restoring a Cub.
