I have heard that about the markers. I was lucky enough to find them I guess. What makes you say it's a 174? I looked through the manuals and the 172 and 174 look the same but I would guess there has to be a difference.

I do not see any mention of the Richmond corn hopper in the 174 planter manuals, specifically!
The Richmond hopper is in the 171 / 172 manual!

Re: Planter ID?
Hi,
The implement owner's manuals have lots of info about putting the implement on the Cub, and using it. Below is the list of implement owner's manuals from Rudi's Manuals.
There are several models of planters in the listings.

This manual below shows the Richmond hopper on page 1, there are 3 hoppers on the page.

That was what I thought for a long time as it was the only obvious difference I could see. Unfortunately, I was working with a very early revision of CubI-1. Somebody on here (I have long-since forgotten who) pointed out to me that the later revisions of the parts catalog showed the 172 with the later style mount. It also showed a conversion package to convert early planters to the second style mount. So that isn't the answer! But he pointed me at something else. The difference appears to primarily be seed hoppers. The 172 came with several hopper choices, including the Richmond hopper. The 174 used the combination hopper. One of the bottom ends for that hopper used the same plates as the Richmond hopper.
You can see this in Cub-1A Revision 3. It is in the PDF files as CBI-1A Cub-144 Cultivator Rev 3 12-52 rev1r. The 172 and 174 are in the same section of the catalog starting on page 115. You can see equivalent difference from the 171 to the 173, starting on page 102.

The reason you did not see anything about Richmond corn hopper was because the 174 used a combination planter hopper.
Other difference seem to be be how the planter attaches to the frame. I have one or the other, now I need to go investigate.

Yes, the reason I said I did not see the Richmond Corn hopper in the 174 manual was to rule the 174 out.
I think we can conclude that if you have a Richmond corn hopper, then based on that and what lower dirt working tools it has will determine whether you have a 171 blackland planter, or the 172 runner planter.
Since the original poster has a Richmond corn hopper and a runner, it is safe to say he has the 172 model!
I have a 172 myself!

Thanks for all the replies. I think I have a 172 from all the info.
