Wiring

Postby KimCub » Sat Nov 14, 2020 9:34 pm

I have a 1957 cub we bought last year. Something happened and it wouldn’t start. It cranked but wouldn’t turn over. We took the top off and found the wiring harness was shredded. We ordered a new harness and decided to switch from points to a pertronix electronic ignition and appropriate new coil. I am having difficulty finding correct wiring diagram. The one that came with harness only has the one wire from distributor but electronic ignition has two wires. The instructions from pertronix just have the two wires going to the two posts on the coil. Nowhere am I finding exactly how to connect my #1 wire coming from ignition switch in dash #2 black wire from pertronix #3 black with white stripe wire from pertronix #4 I believe I still need a ground wire from coil to chassis

I have watched several videos and have just confused myself
One has me connecting #1 & #2 directly and another has them connected to a coil post.

Can someone please tell me how to connect everything properly?
Thanks in advance
Kim

You didn't mention whether your Cub is original 6 volt Pos. ground or converted. The Pertronix connects differently, depending on which set-up you have. The easy solution, though, is to follow the instructions from the harness kit, then follow the Pertronix instructions. You'll find that the Pertronix simply adds on to the existing system.

Positive ground 6 volt
Am I right that black is black and black with white stripe is red?

Not sure what you mean by that! If I remember correctly, the 6v. pos. ground Pertronix connects in a different manner, one lead going to ground. I don't have an instruction sheet for one of those but you should have. Make sure your instruction sheet is the correct one. It might be available on line, if you doubt you have the correct instructions.

I have to say I have not been successful getting pertronix electronic ignition to work at 6 volts. I have tried several times. It is my understanding they have a high low voltage limit I think 5.6 or 5.7 volts to work at 6 volts vs 8 volts on the 12-volt system.

I suggest go back to points and get it running, work out any issues with the new wiring harness and try again.

I like to make one major change at a time.
