A Restoration Project

Postby Johns 1950 Farmall » Wed Dec 14, 2005 11:31 pm

Hey all I thought I'd ell you guys what I'm doing with my 1950 Farmall Cub.

Well I'm entered in the JB Dewar Tractor restoration competition. This is very similar if not the same as the chevron lubricants tractor restoration competition. Well this is my second tractor I've enterd in the contest. My first was my great grandads 9N that had passed throughout the family.

Anyway I got this cub for FREE from one of dads friends at work. The cub is complete and just needs rebuilding. I'm in the middle of rebuilding the engine, which is in the machine shop. I'm having the crank ground, getting the bores bored out to .030 over (got the pistons and rings from napa just awaitng there arival), Also am having the head and block ground, I'm reusing the valve train but having the valves 3 faced ground and polished, the seats will get a polish and ground, and replacing worn parts.

I've yet to start rebuilding the tranny which I"m a little hesitant about but I've got the service manual, Parts manual, and 2 operators manual all from jensales, so i should be able to pull it off. I'm also going to rebuild the generator, voltage regulator, and govenor. And the list goes on but I'm having a good time and I love it.

Sounds like you have a good base of experience from the Ford.

Free Cub!!??? That makes the parts bill much easier to swallow...... You have the right tractor and have come to the right place, lots of great folks and wisdom on this board. Swing by the chat room in the evening too.

The tranny on my 50 is my next project. I would recommend that you do all the seals and gaskets on the final drives (look at the bearings too) while you got it apart.

Rudi will be along with the welcome spiel shortly.

Make us proud and win!

John, are those .030 over pistons from NAPA cast iron or aluminum?

I'm not sure if there cast or aluminum, but I do know that they are $330!!! for 4 of them with rings. I dont think I'm going to get them because I can get a rebore kit from Valu-bilt for $159 and dont see me spending $330 for just pistons and rings.

Does any one know why they are so expensive from napa and why valu bilt has them for $159? How much are they from a CASE/IH Dealer?

And no My cub isnt a demonstrator.
