I read that post 6 times before I realized you where talking about speed not direction. "Boy am I slowing down mentally." I think a lot of times I do what I accuse my wife of doing, when she finishes my sentences. I assume I knew what you were going to say instead of just reading it. Sorry bout that. Walter

I did the same thing, but I quickly realized that that would mean that 6 volt Cubs would have 3 reverse gears and only one forward. My exceptional common sense reminded me that they would not have been very practical.

It often amazes me when I am Previewing a post, how I have written what my mind had thought sounded good, but when reread, made no sense! Guess I needed to reread that post one more time before Submitting!!!

Darn it Dale. I just searched the internet for articles on and symptoms of mild cognitive impairment and cognitive degeneration in the elderly.
I have an excuse. CRS.

OK, I left off with a bug infested exhaust pipe. I was hoping to vacuum them up and out, but nope! So I removed the exhaust manifold, and it was a good thing:

I cleaned the critters out, and now have some miscellaneous parts ordered from TM Tractor Parts, which include the exhaust manifold gasket.

I cleaned and painted the 6v starter after checking that it worked. Then I installed it so I can do a compression test.
I must admit, that I am amazed at the condition everything seems to be in! It has been under a shed for several years since parked, and other than the gummy carb (exterior only) and buggy exhaust manifold, things are very clean, albeit dusty.

While I had the exhaust manifold and carb off, it was a good time to adjust the valves. It has never been so easy with everything removed!! And I have never seen a cleaner valve train as this cub:

Oh, and I know it has been mentioned numerous times, but for those who haven't seen it, the best way I know of to find TDC (top dead center) is using a cork; just put it gently into #1 spark plug hole and turn the handcrank until it pops like a champagne cork!! I definitely need to tie a string to that puppy!!!

Oh darn! I forgot to show you what came out of the exhaust manifold:

Also. while I had it in hand, I reopened the small drain hole on the bottom:

And my TDC Cork (it can shoot that thing across the room :D !):

Question: Does having the exhaust manifold off affect a compression test?

Some acorn nuts are magnetic, others aren't.

Dale, that is the cleanest set of valves I have ever seen! Thanks for pointing out the drain hole on the manifold...had no idea one existed there.

Something I meant to ask about...I THOUGHT that when adjusting the valves, you used two 1/2" wrenches. This one required a 1/2" for the bottom, and a 7/16" for the upper nut. Is my memory wrong? (Wouldn't be the first time! )

Dale,

That's gonna be one nice Cub once you work the "bugs" out of it.
