Dash Board Knockout

Postby Underwood » Thu Feb 13, 2020 1:38 pm

Long time lurker here in SW Iowa and I can't thank everyone enough for sharing your knowledge, it has been a real life saver. Cub S/N 6697, with #22 sickle mower. My question - I would like to install an oil pressure gauge in my dashboard so it is more easily visible than the original gauge currently in the oil filter housing. There is what appears to be a "knock out" in the dash board but before I go to pounding on it, is it designed like an electrical box knock out that is easily removed or will I need some way to cut the round center disc out? Again, thank you all for your help.

Darn, I was afraid of that. Guess I'm just going to leave it as is. Thanks for your help.

I installed a gauge on the dash and used a 2" hole saw to cut out the hole in the "knock Out" area. Having that gauge on the dash was well worth it to me.

It is worth the cut out. Hard to forget about oil pressure when it is in your face

I agree, the oil pressure gauge is worth using the hole saw. I prefer to move the ammeter to the left hole, and have the oil gauge on the right. That makes routing the pressure line simpler.

If you use a 2" hole saw, you will likely have to file a bit to get the hole to fit the gage. 2 1/16" is the proper hole saw for gage installation, works much better.

Good suggestions, again thank you all. My Amp gauge is already on the left side so that part is OK. I never have understood why IH put the single most important gauge in a location that is mostly "out of sight, out of mind"

Absolutely!
My first tractor, the ‘58 Lo-Boy had the oil pressure gauge moved to the dash. He also sandblasted the tractor without protecting the glass on the oil and alt gauges so they were frosted over. When I replaced the oil gauge I mounted it where it belongs and am sorry for it.
Gauges should be seen at a glance or seen from your peripheral vision so you can catch a problem when your driving. At the factory location it might as well be under the hood.

It's not hard to hole-saw the place and dress it down to fit. I usually always am leaning over to the right when I drive so never gave it a thought! I can always see mine! lol! ---Probably should move mine too!

I have an old punch that I have used. Greenlee is a popular brand.

On the 184 (different beast than you are working on) I mounted the gauges to a flat piece of steel out where I could see it.

I have the Greenlee hole punch set but they are sized for electrical conduit, don't have one that is the correct size for the gage.
