If you had Headlights Did you Have to Have a Battery?

Postby Brandon Webb » Mon Dec 05, 2005 10:00 am

If you have a magneto, and no electric starter, could you have headlights? Could you have headlights without a battery? Thanks Brandon.

It is possible to have a generator / battery and thus headlights on a cub with a magneto and no starter but it would be unlikely to see such a combination.

If there was no battery there was no need for a generator and therefore there would be no lights.

Ok, so the plain jane cubs could come without headlights, no generator, no electric start, and no battery or battery box. Just a magneto to run the engine. So in the plain jane form, they couldn't have headlights from the factory without a generator and a battery and electric start? Thanks Brandon.

From the factory, a ractor equippped with head lights or a starter would have had a battery and charging system, however it wasn't necessarry to have lights if you had a starter, or vice versa, though that would have been unusual.

Ok, so my real question is can I have headlights without a battery? If I have a mag? Could they have came like this from the factory, I just like the plain looks without a battery box, but I wouldn't have one without headlights. Thanks Brandon.

Thanks, I had saw a tractor without a battery box, but I guess it didn't have headlights either. Brandon.

It's only necessary to have a battery if you want the lights to work. If working doesn't matter, you can even save money on bulbs.

You don't even have to take the bulbs out. Just start one up with a generator and no battery. As soon as you turn the lights on, you won't have any bulbs left.

And you usually won't have a generator for very long either.

Brandon,

On Farmall A's B's and C's produced from inception through the war, there was a system using an american bosch no-battery generator for lights only, on tractors that had hand-crank only start. This was not a terribly popular option, but it did exist. I am not sure if this option extended to the end of these model's production or not.

I do not have a parts manual for cubs for the earliest year or two, but if the option did exist on cubs, Jim Becker would probably know about it. It seems logical that there may have been such an option on hand-crank started cubs, cubs being quite easy to start by crank.

My Farmall A / B parts manual even has a wiring diagram for this system.

You would not be able to run your delco-remy generator without a battery, however, make no mistake.

That would be the TC-37A Parts Calalog. I would think. Unless there was just a TC-37 :?: :?: :?:

Unclear to me when or for low long the no battery lighting system was available on A/B models. It wasn't in the '40 price list or the late '41 list after starting was available. I have never seen one first hand. It never showed in a Cub Parts Catalog, nor for a C as far as I know. By the way, it may have been mainly an export thing.

The first Cub Parts Catalog was TC-37, with no revision letter.
