Hilling Dsc question

Postby yellercub » Sun Jan 19, 2020 1:14 pm

Hi all, I picked up a set of international Hilling discs, 12 1/2 inches in diameter, with the bent shanks. They have one and a half inch diameter Shank’s, where the Cub shanks should measure 1 1/4 inches. There is a part number 1438 – B on the shank. What were these Hilling disc made to fit?

Possibly John Deere. I know their shanks are bigger than IH.

Shane is right, I have turned those shanks down in the lathe to use them for a cub

1438B is a good IH number for the bracket at the hub of a disk hiller. The disk was probably 13 inches when new. Measure the standard more closely and you will probably find it is 1-7/16". The larger standards were typically found on cultivators for the larger tractors -- H and M.

My use of hillers/shafts that fit suggests that only enough of the shaft was stuck into the castings with the wedges to secure them into place. If your setup has only an inch or two that you'd insert...gosh...I'd be thinking of filing/grinding a pair down. Sloppy no doubt and not sure about your length nor how laborious the resizing would be, yet...quick (maybe) and dirty (yup).

Probably originally built for a bigger tractor. H,m, maybe c. I have took shanks and cut the part off that I needed to and welded a piece of round stock in its place. Works flawless. Show quality no, but works just as good.
