Spent some time with the 79 International Cub

Postby rjfcsa » Tue Jan 14, 2020 9:18 pm

Spent a little time with my 79. I knew the hydraulic block was leaky the guy actually had a rebuild kit for it. So off with the hood. It had two broken off screws, for the dog legs, in the bolster one in each side…. Nice. Well rather pleased with myself got them both out. Sanded carefully on the end of itty bitty nubs sticking out, they were basically flush, and tried wire welding some ¼” nuts to them. Right side took about 4 nuts, but came out, left side came on the first nut.
Well started rebuilding the control block, buy the parts list there was supposed to be a wavy spring washer in two of the holes, well not there. :?: I took apart one off a parts unit,it had one of them, in the other hole none. Well I just couldn’t put it together without it, so ordered one form Case IH ouch $38.00 if I remember correctly. Well was trying to finish it up and the o-ring for the control valve appeared to be to small it just about fell back in, :?: :!:   was I think a Steiner kit. Well did some reading here and found others with the same issue. So ordered one of them from case IH $7.00. but fits much better. While on Steiner parts, got to rubber boots for the block. The one for the main cylinder was ok, the one they sell for the control valve is terrible, the larger end that is suppose to fit on the cast nub on the block is about a ½” to big. Well was able to make my old one work, so all should be good there.
Well I got some flitz and one of this ball things for Christmas so I thought I would try it out. Here are some pics of where I did half the hood. Pretty cloudy so pics are a little dark.

Then here are some pics of the whole hood done, then I tried adding some wax and buffing it up. I am pleased with the end results. It is not miracle stuff and it does not put paint back on, but I would say it does work. This tractor has seen many, many miles of mowing, with probably miles of bush and branches rubbing across the hood.

I find if you buy the top boot from steiner and cut the large end off it now fits perfect on the lower valve, the boot from IH for the control valve is like $25 and $9 from steiner, the factory boot for the piston actually fits over the rod and inside the piston so it keeps the crap from freezing up the rod

Quite an improvement! Good job.
Just a side note...you may already have one, but if not, don't forget to order your new, safer and free fuel cap:

I think on original paint a compounding and wax looks should be tried first before a repaint. It it works - I personally like the look better.

Great job on the hood.

Thanks for the comments.
I kind of forgot about the new gas caps, not sure if I want on on it or not :?: I actually like the looks of the shorter type, I know the others are meant to be safer.

Curious has anyone ever seen dates stamped on the hydraulic pump, as well as the hyd. block? besides the casting codes. both of mine appear to have dates stamped on them. the pump is done twice neither done well, looks like 10 24 78 camera did not want to pick it up very well at all.
The block is stamped 3 79.
I just found it interesting.

Hi,
You didn't say if there is any date code cast in the Touch Control block above where your pic is showing.
That is where the date code is on the older blocks.
The block part number was there too.

The part number on the blocks made in most of the 1970's is in the front of the block. I don't know when they moved the part number there, but I think it was in the early 1970's.
Maybe Jim B. or someone knows.

If yours has no numbers cast on the left side of the block, maybe they were stamping the date in them, like yours has. I don't know.

The 1st pic below, from TM Tractor, shows the block part number, and date code location on some blocks.
The 2nd pic shows the part number location on newer blocks. :)

yes there is a date code, it is 12 6 B which would be Dec. of 78. I was just wondering, guessing, are the numbers stamped in the block when my tractor might have been assembled? and the numbers on the pump maybe a date form when it left the factory where they were made?

I did not take the picture upside down, the code label was put on that way.

Date of maybe the last time that tractor had the hydraulic pump rebuilt on it.
