Picked up a Cub last weekend. The cast code is J so I'm assuming it's a 63 model. The serial number plate is painted over, so I'll start on cleaning that first. Looking forward to all the knowledge available in this forum.

Welcome! You're in good company in Louisiana; lots of forum members down that way.
Take some time and read through a few threads to acquaint yourself with the Forum:
Now that you have 2 posts, you can access all the free PDF downloads in the Manuals section. They are located via "Quick Links" in the upper left corner of your screen. Hit that and a pull-down appears where you'll find "PDF Manuals". Through that link, you'll be able to download an Owner's Manual (very strongly recommended) and any service manuals that interest you--including IH #2 manual that covers the governor. You'll be able to familiarize yourself with your new-to-you Cub more quickly. Implement Manuals are also available.

Don't know if your Cub is in running condition or not, but one of the most important things to do before trying to start up your Cub (if it's been sitting for years) is to prime the oil pump. Remove the oil filter top and filter. There's a small hole in about halfway down the back side of the filter opening. Squeeze engine oil in there until it overflows that hole. Consider it primed.
Make plans to attend next year's Louisiana CubFest in Bogalusa. Info on it and other CubFests AND articles on what a CubFest are all about are located here:

Take some pictures of your tractor and post them. We’d like to see it.

Re: New to me...
Hi,
Welcome to the website.
If you found the J stamped in the serial number plate, after the serial number, that is not a date code. That J means it originally had a Rockford clutch.
If you found J's on one or more castings, as part of date codes, then that is the year they were made.
Below is the 1965 Cub and LoBoy owner's manual. The experts on here recommend people read it. It has lots of info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. There is a table of contents on page 1.
It shows how Cubs originally looked in it.
They have said on here that IH didn't make a new manual every year.
The manual has 6 and 12 volt electrical system info.

I would check or change all the oils before using the Cub. Using it with low oil in a gear case can damage the parts in it.
The lube section begins on page 59.
The transmission can get water in it from rain, or condensation inside it over time.
People write on here that it commonly happens.
The filler plug is on top of the trans, to the rear of the shifter.
The oil level plug is low on the left side of the trans, near the muffler with an underaxle exhaust system.
The drain plug is on the bottom of the trans, visible from under the platform.
The trans holds 3 1/2 Pints of oil, when filled to the level plug hole.
There are also 2 final drives, each with it's own separate oil to check.
The Cub owner's manual shows how to check or change the oils.

Since he said the data plate is painted over, it should be safe to say he could not see a J on the plate. I would believe the J he found is the cast date.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: New to me...
Hi,
Yes, I thought of that, Bill, but he didn't say where the J was, so I thought I would write it in case it was needed.
