Idler sheaves for Woods 59CF-1

Postby bauerei » Wed Aug 21, 2019 11:13 pm

Hello everyone,

Both idler sheaves on my Woods 59CF-1 have bad bearings. They are Woods part no. 3165 (Item no. 48 in the Woods parts diagram). I am not able to find a replacement for these. They are 5" diameter with a 5/8" diameter mount and are iron. Is there a generic idler sheave that I can use instead of OEM?

Thanks

Hamilton Bobs has a generic replacement but shows an O.D. of 4.5''

Take the old one to a bearing supply house, you will get them mulch cheaper. Either the bearing aloe or complete idler

Oreilly is convenient for that bearing. I found them on eBay for under $5...bought several...

I've done some more research. It appears that one of the differences between 59CF-1 and 59CF-2 was the idler pulleys. In 59CF-1, the bearing in the idler pulley was not replaceable, as it's not listed as a separate part. This pulley was part no. 3165. Here's a photo of one of mine:

In 59CF-2, the pulleys were replaced by Woods part no. 4336, which had a replaceable bearing.

The Woods replacement is a bit pricey. I think I've found a suitable substitute at Tractor Supply. I'll give it a go.

Thanks, everyone.

P.S. The idler sheave is actually 5" O.D., not 6". Sorry for the typo.

You should be able to grind off the rivet heads, separate the two halves of the pulley, replace the bearing and pop rivet or bolt the two halves back together. I haven't done it on a Woods, but I have on several IH pulleys and it works well. Tst gave you the # for the replacement bearing in his post above.

Thanks, Bob. You guys are at a higher pay grade than me, but I'll give it a try. It will be a good learning experience.

Thanks to everyone's help, I have the idler pulleys/sheaves almost done.

I used a drill press to drill off the ends of the rivets. I separated the halves and then hit the insides with some primer:

I test fitted the bearing. FYI, the correct bearing for these sheaves was 203KKR2. These sheaves/pulleys are 5" in diameter.

I then pressed in the bearing:

5/16 stainless steel pin rivets:

Done. Now on to paint.
