Touch control fluid
I have a rebuild kit that I am beginning to install on the touch control of my 49 cub. I watched Steiner 's video on how to dismantle and replace seal, o-rings, gaskets etc. I was surprised when they recommended to use 30 wt oil in the unit. Their reasoning was that in case of a leak in the pump, the crankcase wouldn't be contaminated with hydro fluid. What's the collective thought on that?

Re: Touch control fluid
Personally, I would ignore what Steiner says and use what IH says. Hydraulic oil shouldn't hurt an engine if it gets in it. If the pump o-ring fails you should know it pretty quickly when the hydraulics quit working and will have to change the engine oil anyway because it will be overfilled.

Re: Touch control fluid
Second on what Shane said. Motor oil detergents cause trouble in hydraulic systems. That is why Touch-Control fluid was developed. Viscosity of 30 weight oil is also too high. SAE 10 would be more appropriate for hydraulics and if a bunch of 10W gets into the engine you should change it anyway.

Thanks everyone. That confirms what I suspected.

Re: Touch control fluid
If you are not already aware of it, there are 2 very good posts in the HOW TO section for rebuilding the 2 different Touch Control blocks. They include great photos of the proper order of parts, with discriptions of how to remove some difficult ones from the bores. I suggest you print them out so you have them handy, and be very methodical with the work, taking lots of photos! Use that HyTran LIBERALLY during reassembly!
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
