Back again/whole new problem

Postby papscub » Thu May 30, 2019 5:50 pm

Posted briefly seems like years ago but had some personal issues to deal with and back close to normal. While dealing with such issues my Cub was left out in the weather and now is rusted up to the point that even with the head off i can't rock the tractor. The lifters are rusted and valve stems too.Have been soaking it in kroil oil etc but thinking now i'm just going to put spring compressor on it and take the springs off, drop oil pan off and take rod caps off. It looks like i'll need new lifters, valve guides, springs and keepers, send block to shop for a freshen up. The rings are in good shape i guess because the oil takes forever to leak down past them but will put new rings on and have cylinders honed. Anything else i should do or anyone have a suggestion to avoid all that work?

Actually looks like just barely over a year May 16, 2018 which definitely could seem like years ago if going through a rough patch.
I think a couple pictures would help us to better understand what condition the engine is in.

Advice? Keep soaking and see if you can get things like a valve or lifter to move independently. The more things you can confirm are free, makes the list of things left to hold it smaller and smaller. Rings in good shape or is it rust holding the oil? What do the bores look like in the piston down cylinders?

Looking thru the exhaust ports I can see rust on the valve stems between the valve guides and the where the valves seat. I’ve sprayed them daily and rocked the tractor but still no movement. I’ve ordered new valves, keepers etc and am just going to replace them all, I figure some of the valve guides would end up damaged in the effort of getting it unstuck anyway, so I’ll replace them all. Hopefully when the new valve train gets here and I have all the valves out it will turn over. The cylinders look good and I have vacuumed all the trash out. I’m still trying to figure out how water got in every part of the engine. Even the lifters have rust!

Ok , no fish but pictures of engine. It says they’re too big and I’m too dumb to know how to resize. Any have a cell phone I can send pictures to and repost for me?

Side note, I’ve been ordering parts for the rebuild and in a rush I ordered exhaust manifold gaskets for a lowboy 185. Will they fit the cub?

The 185 gasket openings will be slightly larger than the holes in the manifold and block, but it should still seal and should not change the way it runs.
The 185 has a larger manifold.

Ok, all the valves are out and lifters aren't stuck but still can't get the motor to turn. Guess i'll take the pistons out and re ring it since i'm that far into it now. I'm still at a loss how it's so rusty. Any ideas?

Hi,
You didn't say what year the Cub is, I guess it has a vertical exhaust, and you didn't cover the pipe, and rain got in the engine.
The engines with vertical exhaust could have internal coolant leaks too.

If it has an under axle exhaust system, rain can't get in the engine. Probably the only way water would be in in the cylinders is if it has an internal coolant leak, head gasket leaking, or cracks, etc. :)
