Mike, I was thinking along the same lines. Use a block of wood to soften the blow. Or, drill a hole in the block of wood just the diameter of the zert but deeper, allowing it to catch the shoulder and drive it in that way.

I found a solution in a nut driver that just fit over the knob end and would bear on the base of the zert. Plastic handle for impact resistance and a small ballpeen hammer worked just fine. I thank everybody for their suggestions.
