Things to do while your Cub is split?

Postby clintmo » Sun Apr 28, 2019 9:42 am

I'm planning on replacing a rear main seal at the Bash. I've not done this job, or any other requiring splitting the Cub, so I'd appreciate suggestions on any other things I might want to take care of while we have it apart. I'll have clutch parts on hand. And besides the new seal/retainer, what other parts will I need for that job?

Thanks,
Clint

Wedges for front axle. Rear seal retainer gasket, Pan gasket, sealer to put on bolt threads for flywheel. (the bolts go through the crankshaft into the inside of engine where the oil is) check oil pump gasket while you are in there. Also if you are having any leaks at the front of the transmission you may need a new retainer and seal assembly and gasket. Gaskets and o-rings for the hydraulic manifold. A few cotter pins to put linkages back together. If you are having any clutch issues you may consider also the throwout bearing hanger and pivot pin for the hanger. Season the throw out bearing with cheap grease. Put bearing in ziplock bag after you smear it with grease and lay in the sun to warm it so it will soak up the cheap grease into the graphite pores.

Since you will have some help, couple of extra hands, I would replace the seal on the front of the transmission.

I think the previous posts have you pretty well covered. You might take a couple quarts of engine oil. Grease gun with cheap grease for the throw out bearing and the pilot shaft bushing. Bunch of grease rags.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I just pulled the flywheel this AM. Never would have thought to put sealer on the flywheel bolts when it comes time to put things back together. Most of my half tubes of sealer are 20 years old, so I guess I better run to my local auto parts store and get some new. What do you recommend for flywheel bolt sealer?

A couple of cold beverages to celebrate a completed mission later around the campfire.

Hi,
You could use sealer on the flywheel bolts, if they leaked oil, it would probably get on the clutch lining.

Below is a pic of sealer. I use Permatex Aviation Form A Gasket for the head bolt threads, or other threads. They sell it at NAPA here in the west US. If you buy one, stir it well before using, it settles in the bottom of the can sitting. :)

Thanks, folks. This old tractor hasn't been split in a very long time. I want to make it count.

Barnyard, I'm always looking forward to the afterparty.
