IH Cub Engine Identification

Postby XFIRE » Tue Apr 09, 2019 11:21 pm

I have a 1972 IH Cub and would like to know exactly which engine & horsepower it is. I can easily see all the numbers on the block, but do not know what they represent.

Start by checking out this resource.

All Cubs used the IH C-60 engine. Horsepower ratings changed over the years of production, due mainly to slight changes in internal components.

Also a previous owner could have swapped out engines and/or parts and/or bored out the engine. If you want to know the exact horsepower of your particular engine, the only way I know to determine that is by putting it on a dynamometer.

Most of the HP changes over the years came from changes in the RPM. Torque stayed the same max at 1600. However, the RPM max went from 1600 early to 2400 at the end. Your 1972 should have the popup pistons. A good tune-up and valve adjustment will get you very close to the max hp of the C60 engine.

here is a nice post on the HP and torque curve viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15061
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Hi,
inairam, I think you may be thinking of the numbered series Cubs, the regular Cub didn't have that high a RPM, according to the Cub service manual.

Below is a page from it with the RPM specs. Engine serial number 312390, in the info, was the first Long Stripe Cub engine, made in 1975. It says the RPM for it, and after, was 2080.
Engines below that serial number were 2000 RPM. That would go back to Cub serial number 192113, which was made in 1955. IH raised the RPM at that serial number.
Before that the maximum RPM was 1800.

A 1972 Cub would be 2000 RPM. :)
