oven cleaner

Postby kylev » Tue Nov 15, 2005 11:46 pm

Has anyone used over cleaner to strip the paint off of their cub. I have a guy that I know that restores John Deer tractors and said that is what he uses.

I use it all the time for degreasing and the bonus of any paint it takes off with the grease. Dont use it on aluminum & dont breath it. It is the best thing I have foud for cleaning grease and I have tried allof the so-called degreasers on the market. Plus oven cleaner is the cheapest. I buy it at the $Dollar-Store$.

Oven cleaner works very well, being especially helpful in cleaning in areas where a wire brush won't reach. It needs to be used outside or in a well-venilated area because of the strong fumes. Spray on a thick layer, give it time to act and most grease and paint can then be removed with a strong jet of water. Read and follow directions on the can to prevent splashing cleaner onto eyes or skin. Dan

Keep in mind that JB's warning about aluminum includes the serial plate and the data tags on the electricals.

Check out the lye gravy directions and photos on http://www.fboerger.com/

They're under "restoration tips" and discussed elsewhere in this forum.

I've used the gravy to clean up some implement pieces I wasn't afraid to screw up. It worked very well.

Read about the lye gravy, thought it would be cool to make your own paint stripper, but it sure sounds like alot of work. Don't think my wife would like me cooking paint stripper in her new kitchen. Kind of like the look she gave me last night  when I told her I bought another cub!
